We are looking forward to coming to the NS Rendezvous in July.
This topic may not be at the top of everyone's list -
Is there a dress code for the Royal Yacht Club events?
If so, please advise.

Thank you,

You can find the pesky RCYC dress code on the club's website RCYC.ca but it is much modified from earlier years. I expect people to come to all three receptions in sailing gear although you wouldn't look out of place if you changed out for a casual outfit. Some people will come to the small, casual reception on Thursday in other than sailing clothes because locals like me, won't have been sailing. I have no doubt that people will show up in sailing clothes to the dinner at Mimico on Saturday but there's dancing and it's an excuse to wear something else if you want one, but will not be fancy.  The RCYC code is fairly permissive but doesn't allow distressed clothing. It's hard to give up being the fashion police.

Here's what I found when I went and looked at https://rcyc.ca/staging-area/NEW/About_RCYC/Dress_Code:

RCYC DRESS CODE

The RCYC Dress Code is intended to maintain the standards and traditions of our Club. Members and their guests are invited, and strongly encouraged, to embrace the spirit and intent of the Club's Dress Code. Members are responsible for advising their guests of the RCYC Dress Code and for their guests respecting this Code.

Please note that the RCYC Dress Code applies to children age ten and over. Children aged nine and under should wear neat and clean clothes.

Dress Code for Clubhouses & RCYC Launch:
  • No ripped, distressed or unclean clothing
  • No apparel shorter than midthigh (extremely short hemlines are not permitted)
  • No low-riding pants
  • No athletic tank tops or muscle shirts
  • No bare feet, wetsuits, or swimwear
  • No attire displaying crude jokes, expletives, lewd slogans or racist and demeaning content
  • No hats, save for ladies' dress hats, may be worn in either Clubhouse

Special events, including regattas, may provide exceptions to select restrictions or set an event-specific requirement.

The thing I'm most worried about is the clean clothes requirement.  I can't even look at food listed on a menu without some of it ending on my shirt.  I try to color-coordinate my clothes with my lunch plans, but there are so many food groups to deal with.  Maybe I'll be able to sneak through...

Nick:  I assume, then, that a jacket is not required, but long pants are.
Thanks,
Joe

Joe,

If I'm correctly reading Nick's comment that, "I expect people to come to all three receptions in sailing gear," and the official dress code statement about "apparel no shorter than mid-thigh," your shorts are ok.

For me personally, my dermatologist insists I wear long pants.  I have to bring a note from my parents, co-signed by a sunscreen provider, in order to get special permission just to wear short sleeves.

When in doubt, Nonsuch regalia is always in good taste, though.

Thank you all. I much appreciate the information and love your sense of humor :-)
We will plan to leave our distressed clothing at home.

Long pants are not required. The dress code is quite pemissive. Most people will come to most social events in sailing gear but I expect to see some dressing up for the splendid dinner and dance at Mimico. It can get quite hot in late July and certainly for sailing shorts and ample sun screen may be the order of the day but I doubt I will wear my sailing shorts to the dance if for no other reason that I look like an eejit doing so.

I have attended a few events at RCYC.  It reputation for being stuffy is a bit over blown. They know how to throw a great party.  But it's got a unique and well deserved reputation for class.

If you can make it you'll not regret the experience.

It is a lovely and very warm and welcoming place. I've stayed there aboard my boat as a reciprocal from my club.

Definitely a great place to visit and rendezvous.
