Hi Everyone,

Sorry if I should have linked this to another conversation but it seemed logical to start another. I am currently replacing all my fuel lines and fittings and putting the primary water separator filter where I can get to it.  I am also hoping to take the tank out, inspect it and clean it for the first time in its 32 years and then fit two inspection panels which I know was a recent conversation topic.  If all goes well, I will use the old filter as a fuel polisher and permanently plumb it in.  To save my 'down time', I want to get the tank fittings in advance.

The two fittings I need to identify screw into brazed outlets on top of the original tank and are as follows
1) The fuel tank outlet which connects to the fuel tap
2) and the fuel return pipe inlet to tank

Can anyone clarify the thread size for these fittings-they appear identical.  I guess they will be NPT.  Mark Richards (Beets farming) suggested they were '1/2" MPT (sic) in a post from July last year.

I have attached a photo of the fuel return fitting (to bottom of photo).  The outlet above is for the diesel heater and is to be replaced.

Many thanks,

Sean:  Looking at the photo, it would seem that it is 1/4” and probably NPT like mine.  Make sure you pull the pipe out, and if it still has a screen, remove it!!  As I’ve mentioned in the past, every spring I pull my sending unit out, place a rigid hose to the very bottom and pump out what is there.  Sometimes it’s just dirt and water.  I never have fuel problems.  Also, my Raycor primary filter is 2 microns.

Thanks Joe.

I got the original fuel return fitting out today.  The part that screws into the tank itself is not 1/4 NPT-I think it may be 3/8 NPT-there is a definite taper so it is not a BSP (?).  A photo is below showing it compared with a 1/4 NPT to 8mm tail fitting.

Is anyone able to clarify if this fitting size is the same as that which screws into the tank and the fuel pick up connects to.  There is no way I can that out until the tank is out as I cannot get purchase to turn it!

Many thanks again,

Sean Curran

Did you compare the thread dimensions to a chart? Pipe thread sizes go by the diameter of the pipe so a 1/4 npt thread is a lot bigger than 1/4”.  It looks like it is npt

Sean

Glad you bought this up. You have reminded me that since I converted BIANKA to electric propulsion I've been planning to turn the fuel tank into a non-potable water wash down tank for fresh water rinse downs. Not sure if I will be able to use the fuel fittings to feed the water pump. I suspect I will need larger fittings. So far I've added a large access port and cleaned out the tank now time to install and plumb the pump. Hopefully this spring.
