My Paloma water heater has been flawless for the last 20 years. This spring the pilot light works but will not ignite to heat when the hot water line is activated. The water pressure seems adequate, so perhaps a valve is stuck? Does anyone know of a source to send the unit for repair? My other option is to go with the Excel 1.6L, but the only info I can find for it is on Amazon.

The Excel unit is far superior to the old Paloma and quite inexpensive at that.
Installation is very simple and straightforward and easier that removing the Paloma.
My next Nonsuch will get an Excel if it doesn't already have one.

I cannot help you with advice on repairing your Paloma, but if you're interested in the Excel hot water heaters I can say I've purchased 3 of them.  The newest model, with the magnetic sensor, is particularly good in that it works with low water pressure.

I've also found that the customer service/technical support from Excel America is great.  They answer emails within a day and are very helpful.  Even long after they've made the sale.

Phil:

I used Low Energy Systems to repair my water heater with good service and results.  Here is a link to their Web page that describes their services: http://www.tanklesswaterheaters.com/techsupport/paloma-legacy-support.html.   If any questions, please let me know.

If I'd known about LES I would have sent my heater to them. As it stands, I've ordered an Excel. It's great to know there's a Paloma repair source. Phil

I vaguely recall hearing many years ago that US insurance companies were unwilling to insure boats with interior propane tankless heaters because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.   Paloma was specifically mentioned at the time.

I take it this has changed?

Has anyone had insurance problems recently?

For what it’s worth, we suffered a near catastrophe last season when using our brand new Excel for the first time and there was an explosion. It was determined, after an inspection by two marine surveyors and two fire investigators that it was a most likely a faulty installation and not the fault of the ExceL. It was pretty bad but could very very easily been much worse.

When I contacted local marine gas installers for replacement I couldn’t find a reputable experienced person who would do it. The most recommended guy scolded me! “There’s no place for a propane hot water heater on a boat!" he admonished me. Of course the fire inspectors had plenty of explosion tales as well.

We are going with an engine heated unit.

Just sayin…

Bob,
I’m sorry to hear about your accident. I hope everyone was OK. Scary!

Do you know what went wrong with the installation? There is not much to it. Hook up the propane line and then the in/out water lines. That’s it. Was the propane line not sealed properly? If there was a leak there I would have thought that the regular pressure safety tests would have detected it. Did it pass the pressure test?

I think the Excel on-demand water heaters are safer than the stove and oven if used properly. That said, any propane installation has to be treated with respect and caution. Thanks for sharing your tale. Any additional details would be welcome.

This event is not resolved yet and consequently I am reluctant to say too much until it is finalized.

It is a story many of the group will find fascinating.

Sticking with the propane theme, I have a propane stove and heater but an engine heat / shore power hot water tank.  Our vessel is equipped with a Xintex propane detection system with shutoff solenoid, however it failed the inspection during a recent survey.  I've been thinking about either replacing it with another similar system or just going with an explosive gas alarm (cheaper).

We do have a DC switch for the solenoid so when the main battery switch is turned off Propane is cut off automatically, and it's habit to shut off the main when leaving her moored so the detector is really only a concern when we are occupying the cabin.

So what i'm wondering is, what are others doing to protect from propane leaks, is it more common to have the auto-shutoff system or just an alarm?

To my knowledge they do not.  However insurance is a varied thing and really pays to shop around.  Insurers wax hot and cold on any given market on any given year so it is a constantly changing landscape.   I know of folks who were with the same insurer for decades to wake up one morning to discover there premiums were way over market... but great care is needed to ensure you are comparing like to like and a good broker will do this.
