It looks like I'm in the market for a new water pump for our Westerbeke W21.  There is blackish-grey slimy substance emitting from the small drain hole located behind the belt pulley.  I'm assuming the internal seal is allowing coolant to enter the bearings.
Has anyone taken the time to have this pump rebuilt?  Is there a rebuild kit available? Or, is it best to just throw in the towel and buy the $350 unit?

Jack,

These seals wear out periodically and are readily replaceable by a qualified pump shop. The most difficult part is removing the pump.

Make sure they/you inspect the shaft for wear spots/grooves and that it is perfectly smooth. A good time to replace the impeller, as well.

If I recall correctly there are 2 seals – an inner and outer. If so, would replace both.

Good luck,

Larry Jack NU 261 ‘Felina”  (regretfully for sale)

Jack:  If you can’t rebuild it yourself, it’s probably better to buy a new one.  Normally when you take the pump apart, the shaft and bearings are worn in addition to the two seals.  The original pump #24143 had been changed to 37431 which was also changed to 48500.  This fits all the W13, 18, 21, 27, 27A & 33 engines.  I bought one in February for $422 plus shipping.  If you can buy it for $350, buy it and let me know who sold it to you.

The part number I have in my manual is Westerbeke #030591. (now obsolete, except for some left over stock inventory)
But...I also noticed "AISIN" embossed on the hose connection.  That part number comes up AISIN#  WPM-036 for $90 at a tractor parts supplier.  It sure looks the same.... except for that high-tech red Westerbeke engine paint is omitted.
I know the Westerbeke W21 is a marinized Mitsubishi K3D engine block, but I'm curious to know if the water pump was part of the original Mitsubishi block, or was it part of the Westerbeke marine retrofitting?

Joe,
Where would I find the part number on the exiting pump to know which of the three versions I have?  Or is there another way to tell? And are the impellers the same for all three pumps?
Thanks,
Jim

Guys....let's make sure we are talking about the same pump.  The one I'm referring to is mounted on the front of the engine and is used to recirculate the engine coolant; and is driven by a V-belt.  I believe the one Joe is mentioning is regarding the fresh water pump that supplies "sea water" to the heat exchanger and exits via the exhaust riser.

He rebuilt mine last year and turned it around in three days. He was very reasonable.

Ahah!!  Yes, the circ pump is a Mitsubishi item and much cheaper.  Google the K3D circulation pump and it’s less expensive then a raw water pump.  They cannot be rebuilt.  I replaced mine about six years ago and got it from Ocean Marine in Portsmouth, VA.  Also, try Trans Atlantic Diesel in VA.

Hi Joe,
Stewart actually called it "remanufacturing". Anyways they returned the same pump I sent them, just like new and so far it works fine...knock on wood.

I just found out from NCW Tractor, they have a complete rebuild kit for $50, plus shipping.  Comes with bearings, 2 seals, and both the internal and external backing plate gaskets.  Maybe a way to go if anyone is handy and interested in "tinkering" with something.
