My (new to me) 1987 Nonsuch 30 Ultra came with the original Professional Mariner 60 amp battery charger. The name plate says:  PRO 40-60 4 Bank.  Picture attached
It apparently runs fine and there are 3 relatively new lead acid batteries connected.  They are Crown group 27 Deep Cycle 95 Ah and might be 2 years old. I want to expand the battery bank with another lead acid or update to AGM.  Any opinions? Does anyone have a manual for the original charger? Should I replace it with a modern "smart charger" ?
Thanks,
Doug Farrand

I had a similar charger on our previous Cape Dory.  I called Promariner and they explained that these chargers are of "ancient" technology and should be replaced unless you stick with batteries that are also of "ancient" technology.  AGM batteries need smart chargers.

Doug:  That charger states on the label it is automatic.  If it was on my boat and it was working, I’d continue to use it if I had wet cell batteries.  Also, if you add another battery, it appears that you should have a spare output line for it.

Thanks Tim and Joe.
Considering that the 3 batteries are of the same age and "ancient" chemistry, I'm thinking of moving the solo one to join the other two on House Bank 2. I could then buy a lead acid starter battery for Bank 1 and use the old charger for a few more years. Still keen to find a manual if anyone has a source. Mr. Google couldn't help me.

The battery charging technology has come along way since the 1980's. A nearby lighting strike took out my Pro Mariner charger years ago. Switched to a new high tech charger for the house bank and gel cells. When I converted to Electric Propulsion in 2008 I put in 4 AGM batteries in series to make the 48 volt house propulsion bank. I use a Dual Pro Four battery charger to independently charge each battery in that bank. It has worked well.

I have this charger and the manual (which isn’t much) but it will take me a bit to find it. Might have it here at home, I’ll look and advise.
I replaced it with a Pro Mariner smart charger serving 1 flooded starting battery and 2 deep cycle house batteries wired in parallel. Not difficult to wire in but know your wire sizes, lengths and terminals etc

Doug:  If the charger has 4 outputs, you should have a separate wire to each battery as the charger will isolate them from each other.

My problem with modern smart chart chargers is they have a habit of not charging totally dead batteries.  Some kind of self protection or something.  I had one like Doug’s on my Nonsuch and still use it at the house for misc charging work. It must be well over 35 years old.  I only replaced it because it had a single output.

Hello Doug

Here is a marginal scan of the Professional Mariner sales and troubleshooting guide. As I mentioned, I had the same charger on my boat (since replaced with a Pro Mariner smart charger) and this document was on board as well when I bought the boat

I am about to change my 1990's era 3 stage Freedom Inverter-Charger.  The new chargers are so much better and easier to use.  I only have 3 batteries, two golf carts and a start . The one I have settle on is a VICTRON BLUESMART IP67 CHARGER 12/25.  It is light years ahead of the one I have

IMHO, temp compensation, the ability to set charge voltages and equalize are very  nice. Trojan recommends higher voltage rates for their wet cell batteries and this is easily done on your smart phone.  There are many options out there but is pays to look carefully at all the details.  It will handle AGM and Lith as well, but I am sticking with wet cells as our needs are simple.

Doug,
I agree with your assessment.  Move the old solo battery to the house bank so that bank is all the same age. Then get a new starter battery with the same chemistry. Then while you are using that system you can plan the new new system at your leisure.
