Update on this story. I ended up buying my overhaul kits from HuttonWinches.com in Australia, $38.00 USD each including shipping to Los Angeles, which got me four pawls and eight springs per kit. Better price all the way from Australia than I could get on anything I could find locally. Go figure.
Barient
used 3 sizes of pawls over the years. 1/2" pawls
(00331) for the large winches, 5/16" pawls (00330) for
the main range and then a small 1/4" pawl (00331) for
a few models. There was no 00300 to my knowledge. When
Barient was taken over by Barlow the 5/16" pawl became
01-400. When we took over the Barlow/Barient tooling
we used this number for a pack of 4 x pawls and 8
springs.
What I discovered when I took apart my winches is that the 5/16th inch 01-400 pawls and springs work just fine on my Barient 17s. My sheet winch is now purring like a cat.
Unfortunately, my halyard winch was a Barient 21. That one turns out to take the smaller 1/4" pawls and springs. Despite what Hutton said above about there being no 300 part number, that's what they're called in the Barient 21 manual that I was able to track down. (My Nonsuch 26U manual only covers Barient 17 and 18 models.)
So, the Lewmar replacement kit or the better-priced HuttonWinches kit will both work for at least Barient 17s, but not 21s.
Here's a picture of how they compare. Unfortunately, some of the other springs on the 21 were broken, turning my two-speed winch into a one-speed winch. Since I haven't been able to find the smaller parts, I replaced it with a Lewmar Ocean 30 that I got a deal on. If I ever do find the smaller parts, I'll fix the 21 and use it somewhere else or sell it.
