I'm gearing up to rebuild the three Barient self-tailers on my boat (two Model 17 one-speed STs, and one Model 18 two-speed St).

I've cleaned and lubed winches before, but this time I'm thinking of doing a complete rebuild that will include replacing pawls and springs.

Since Barient's long gone, the only source I could find that claims to offer matching parts is West Marine's "Lewmar - Barient Replacement Kit".

Has anyone used them?   Do these parts actually fit our winches?  (I notice that Barient had different part #s for the two models' pawls: 00330 for the 17's and 01-400 for the 18's.)

Know a better source than West Marine, which wants $50 for a pack of four pawls, and $15 for a pack of 10 springs?

Or should I just live with the pawls in whatever shape they're in and content myself with replacing the springs?

Thanks,

-- Bob

Try Hutton Winches http://www.huttonwinches.com/ in Aus. They are about the only place I found when I needed springs.
I think they have most Barient parts.

I recently rebuilt a Barient 16 using Lewmar pawls and springs. Not sure of the part numbers. Went to the local chandelier with the old parts in hand and bought matching ones.

Ended up calling Hutton in Australia.  I'm getting kits shipped from there to Los Angeles for less than buying from West Marine would've cost.  Estimated delivery time, 2 weeks.

Sadly, West Marine, which is walking distance from my boat, IS the local chandler.  They put everyone else out of business undercutting with bulk prices, but since have decided that they're not in the marine supply business, they're in the "boating lifestyle" business (their words, not mine).

The Lewmar pawls work fine.  You see them on ebay frequently, expect to pay $40 delivered .

There are spring manufactures in the LA area.  When the spring on my lawn tractor broke a local spring manufacturer made one for me.   Just don't be in a rush.

I just asked this question today, as I was in local mast and deck hardware shop, about replacing Barient pawls and springs. He said Lewmar will work fine, but you must replace them as a pair at the same time. If you just buy the pawls and springs its fairly cheap. A complete rebuild kit may have a bunch of pieces you don't need, and cost a lot more.

Cheers

Update on this story.  I ended up buying my overhaul kits from HuttonWinches.com in Australia, $38.00 USD each including shipping to Los Angeles, which got me four pawls and eight springs per kit.  Better price all the way from Australia than I could get on anything I could find locally.  Go figure.

Here is what Allen Hutton told me about Barient replacement parts:

Barient used 3 sizes of pawls over the years. 1/2" pawls (00331) for the large winches, 5/16" pawls (00330) for the main range and then a small 1/4" pawl (00331) for a few models. There was no 00300 to my knowledge. When Barient was taken over by Barlow the 5/16" pawl became 01-400. When we took over the Barlow/Barient tooling we used this number for a pack of 4 x pawls and 8 springs.

What I discovered when I took apart my winches is that the 5/16th inch 01-400 pawls and springs work just fine on my Barient 17s.  My sheet winch is now purring like a cat.

Unfortunately, my halyard winch was a Barient 21.  That one turns out to take the smaller 1/4" pawls and springs.   Despite what Hutton said above about there being no 300 part number, that's what they're called in the Barient 21 manual that I was able to track down.  (My Nonsuch 26U manual only covers Barient 17 and 18 models.)

So, the Lewmar replacement kit or the better-priced HuttonWinches kit will both work for at least Barient 17s, but not 21s.

Here's a picture of how they compare.   Unfortunately, some of the other springs on the 21 were broken, turning my two-speed winch into a one-speed winch.    Since I haven't been able to find the smaller parts, I replaced it with a Lewmar Ocean 30 that I got a deal on.    If I ever do find the smaller parts, I'll fix the 21 and use it somewhere else or sell it.
