I have a large fixed blade propeller that comes in handy when I motor against the strong St. Clair River current, on my way to sail on Southern Lake Huron.
A few weeks ago I noticed that when I throttled up to over 1400 rpm my speed over ground would decrease while the RPM's increased.
Suspecting a slipping clutch I had my marina remove the clutch & attempt to get a new one, only to be told the transmission was obsolete and parts were not available.
I posted a request on this site and luckily found a good used transmission in Mass. After swapping out the clutch from that one the problem is still there.
I'm now stumped. Has anyone had a similar issue?

Did your marina mechanic determine that a clutch (actually, it’s called a “drive plate”) in a marine transmission could do that??  Also, if it was a bad clutch, it would be obvious when looking at it, that it was the source of the problem as it would smell like you left the handbrake on in your car. Does it also slip in reverse??  Are you sure it is going all the way into gear??  I would disconnect the cable at the transmission and put it in gear, then check if the cable end lines up with the lever.  Let me try and talk to a local boat mechanic about that.

Thank you for your interest. As you suggested earlier, today I checked the shifting cable length to the transmission mechanism in the fully forward "in gear" position - unfortunately every thing matched up perfectly. You also questioned if it acts the same in reverse, no, but then again even when tied up at dock with full revs. I don't get the same thrust from my propeller. Yes, to your above question, the Volvo Penta 110S system is a saildrive.  The clutch is different from anything I've seen before in that it is a cone shaped piece of steel that fits into a bronze bell shaped part. There never was a burned smell to the oil or those parts. Fortunately I had three different shop manuals to give to my mechanic.

Today I learned that it's not uncommon for the steel sleeve inside an aluminum propeller to become somewhat loosened and slip under higher speeds and heavy load. I would have to have the boat lifted to check that  out.

I mentioned earlier my current propeller is quite large, in fact it is 15x13L three blade fixed. I'm now wondering if it is to large for the clutch in my Volvo 110S saildrive?  I do have to constantly shift it in and out of gear when I'm in go slow areas. My mechanic said they recently fixed a police boat because the Volvo Penta clutch wore out from them constantly shifting it when they hold their position. Therefore I'm in the market for a good used propeller, somewhat smaller,  that would fit the shaft of my transmission.

Herb, are there not two clutch plates ,one forward and one reverse as I believe there are in Hurth Trans. If so ,and it slips in both directions would that indicate not a clutch problem ?  Joe V your thoughts ?

It would seem like.  I’m going to be seeing my youngest son this weekend who is an outboard mechanic and will be asking him about it

Herb:  I talked to my outboard mechanic son and he said that if the unit is in gear and you can turn the prop by hand, something in the lower end is slipping.  You should not be able to turn it due to the engine compression.

Thank you for your interest Joe. As it turns out the problem was infact the rubber bonding of the steel sleeve inside the aluminum propeller. Apparently the rubber bonding can let go when the propeller is under speed pressure, but the propeller will still work when you are going slower. Two days ago I had the boat pulled and the propeller replaced. Yesterday I had the boat out in the strong current of the St. Clair River and the problem was gone. A special thanks also to David Biltcliffe of SPRAY who responded to my initial request for a replacement clutch assembly. While that didn't turn out to be my main problem the clutch assembly from his old Volvo Penta transmission was in better shape then mine and currently lives on in MISTOFFELEES. Happy days are here again.

I think my son did mention something about that rubber part also.  Glad to see it’s OK now.

Good mo rning Herb

I am glad that you were able to resolve your problem and I am glad that the clutch I from my old sail drive was in better shape than the one you had. Hopefully, you never need some or all of the other parts of that sail drive but if you do, you have them. I am not sure if I ever mentioned it to you but it is suspected that the old Volvo engine/sail drive I removed had less than 600 hours on it. There was no engine hour meter but from discussion with the former owners when I bought the boat had little use. Since I have had the boat, it has very little use when it was in the water and then the boat was out of the water for 5-6 years. In one seaseon and then I replaced the engine and sail drive.

Again, I am glad it all worked out for you. Enjoy the rest of your season.
