Hello there Nonsuch owners.

I am in the midst of replacing the cutlass bearing the hard way.  The prop nut on the Gori prop was badly corroded so I ended up taking the shaft out of the boat.  A nasty job, but I am getting close to being done.  I am rebulding the stuffing box, cleaning all the many coats of paint off the prop and strut and replacing the cutlass bearing.  The setscrew in the strut was actually corroded away so now I am trying to figure out what size is needed.   Your thoughts are appreciated.

My suggestions are to get a bunch of screws around the size of the bore and try them.  Then buy the appropriate setscrew that matches.

Hi Randy
I don't know what you mean by the hard way? Is there an easy way?

I did this a few years ago. It wasn't too hard in the end but the old bearing was very stuck in the strut. couple things:
There were two setscrews in my strut both on the port side of the strut.
They were corroded and covered in paint and I had to drill them out using a bit slightly smaller than the thread.
After cutting the old cutless bearing out with a hacksaw and removing it I could remove what was left of the old setscrews without damaging the threads in the strut.

I believe the setscrews were standard 1/4 20 and were sold at my marina. But I may be wrong, they may be smaller. You could easily drill and tap for a larger size if you need to.

I used a long 5/8 threaded rod and big washers and two nuts to press the new bearing back into the strut. The new bearing was a Blackfish, it is supposed to be an interference fit and in my opinion makes the setscrews redundant because of the tight fit.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the helpful answers.

Tom,

I guess there is no easy way other than to use money to solve the problem, but what fun would that be?

I had major surgery about a year ago and this was the first mechanical problem I have undertaken since then. It was an interesting challenge to get my short, fat body into the bilge to sepearate the driveshaft from the flange.  I now KNOW that I can fold my body in half after numerous contortions to get into the proper position to remove bolts, slide things around, put in spacers, bash my fingers, etc.  I have not had this much fun since taking my heat exchanger apart in the middle of the Hudson in the summer 2016!

I am looking forward to dropping the rudder to fix a leak at the rudder tube and to sanding and painting the bottom before floating the boat for the summer of 2018.  Well, I may be lying about looking forward to sanding the bottom, but it is nice to be healthy again and messing around with boats!

I appreciate your help.

Randy

Here is the strut drilling drawing for the Nonsuch 26. The set screws are 1/4 -20. If they are badly corroded, as Ton says, you could go up to a 3/16" screw.

Money sometimes doesn't solve the problem. Just after we bought the boat I hired a professional to do a maintenance task I thought I couldn't do. I found out he couldn't either. And I also got a list of things that were about to fail on the engine and needed immediate attention. The engine is still running perfectly after 10 years despite my neglect and amateur maintenance.

Yes , every year that space by the stuffing box gets smaller. I think my wife likes to see me crawl in there to gauge how far I'v let myself go over the winter. I had some help over the years from two boys but now they are taller than I am and don't come to the boat anymore....

On a happy note,
Last Friday the marina sent me an email saying since I was last out in October I would be first in and to get ready to go first week in April. Wishful thinking. It was -10 C here yesterday morning, I'm going skiing tomorrow and Penetang bay is still frozen solid. First or second week in May is usual launch date. My target is April 13.

Why didn’t the rest of us think to look at the NS26 manual, John??  In the Navy, we call it R.T.F.M.  Read The #%&** Manual
