Hi Evertone,

The plexiglass covering my cockpit guages (oil pressure, tack, etc) is cracked, does anyone know if there is a company that sells replacements?

Thanks

Eric,

If no one comes back with a source, another alternative is to make one for yourself for less than $20 from a 0.125" thickness acrylic sheet.  (I think you'd be better off with acrylic rather than plexiglass because it doesn't scratch as easily.)

You can pop the current one out and use it as a template for cutting the new one.  Simply score the acrylic deeply with a sharp knife or boxcutter, and snap off the excess.   Cut the hole for the key with a hole saw.

Save the old round keyhole cover and plastic throughbolt it swings on if you can.  Otherwise you can either make a new one with leftover material and a small nut and bolt.  Or, just buy a "desk grommet" (the plastic covers that pop on to fill the holes cut in modern desks for computer and desklamp power cords); I found one for a couple of bucks that had a spring-loaded finger hole that kept it sealed while making it easy to remove when needed.

It’s such a small piece, I’ll bet a glass place will give you a piece for free.   If not, Lowes or Home Depot sell it.

Eric -

You can buy plexiglass or acrylic from Home Depot or Lowes (not Lexan - which scratches easily). Assuming you have the Westerbeke control panel, attached is a template I made for cutting to fit. You can use a variety of things to cover the key hole.

Good luck!

As far as I am aware Plexiglass is a brand of acrylic and Lexan is a brand of polycarbonate. Acrylic is generally less expensive than polycarbonate and is more scratch resistant. Polycarbonate is stronger and less likely to crack. For the instrument cover acrylic is probably the better choice. If you are cutting it yourself use a very fine tooth blade and slow speed. Have a good backer board when you drill and again use a slow speed. I replaced the cover for my instrument panel so anyone can do it.

Here is the drawing of the cover. They are not difficult to make. I use a keyhole saw to make the holes. Try practicing on some scrap plastic first.
To remove or insert the cover, put your thumb in the key start hole and bend the cover outwards. The old one may break but the new one is much more flexible.

Here’s a cover which I bought about 4 years ago.  Easy to install and keeps the panel clean and dry.  I realize after looking at these pix that I should have cleaned off the cover before taking the pix.

I like the single piece of polycarbonate for its simplicity and one hand operation.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
