So it's been a couple of years since I discovered the small mound of rust particles beneath the base of my Whitlock Cobra 5R steering pedestal.  Has anyone else done the removal themselves?  I've got time on my hands and that's when I tend to screw things up.  I read that water intrusion from the top is the cause, and the stock bearings are not stainless; I've also read that ceramic bearings might be a good replacement.  What sounds like the hardest part is that the steering arm is welded at the base of the shaft and has to be cut off and then re-welded.  Luckily, I've got some good welders nearby.
Thoughts, warnings?

Thanks

Brian,
You don't seem to be getting much help on this. LA Reina has the Edision cable steering so I don't have any direct knowledge. Here are a couple of links to things I found on the internet.

The first link is to a copy of the installation and maintenance guide for the Cobra system. The second is to a forum discussion the issues. Hopefully this links are of assistance.

Thanks so much, Mark.  I do have the original installation manual; your link to cruiser forum had a great link to some pictures of a removal with Swedish captions- what did we do before google translation!  This project is next on the list.

See you in Victoria, I assume and hope!

I confess I thought all Nonsuch's had Edson Wheels !   Grease is not water proof, water resistant but not water proof....

Thor,
Confession is good for the soul but generally reserved for church, but? Bless you my son, your penitence will be waxing the hull of Mariner’s Cat V while saying “I will no longer make assumptions on boat equipment” and to bring at least one good Nonsuch idea to the rendezvous.

Hi Brian,

I read your post and wondered how things worked out with your steering.  I have the same system and I don't think it's been serviced in quite a while (I've had the boat a year).  Do you have the maintenance manual for the steering?  I have parts of a water damaged manual.

Thanks.

Hi Craig,
It was a long task but turned out great. Two new bearings and ended up re-powdercoating the pedestal and painting the upper bits.
Telltale sign for me was clunky turning and dust pile of rust beneath it behind the engine.
Had no maintenance manual, just the parts diagram and installation manual. Let me know if you want me to send it to you- but it’s also available online I think.
If you’re attempting it yourself (patience) I can give you the low down.

Brian
