Rick if your engine is running good with clean exhaust then there is noting wrong with your injectors, if injectors were bad you would see dirty exhaust (black smoke)

Subject: W21 Injectors

I've pulled my injectors for testing. The engine has 2500 hours and I don't think the injectors have ever been serviced. I'm thinking  at this point they may need a rebuild. I've been quoted $90 per injector for rebuild by a shop in Seattle. I'm wondering if for just a few bucks more I can get brand new ones.

I know from reading here (and from looking at the block) that my Westerbeke 21 is a Mitsubishi K3D. I found a K3D service manual in which I found part numbers for the injector assembly.  For the life of me I can't find a place on the internet that sells an injector for the K3D. Does anyone know of a source that i can at least price out the parts before taking the old ones in to be rebuilt?

New ones from Westerbeke run a couple of hundred. Rebuilds are fine. As Al mentioned you can get them from a Mitsubishi dealer for half the Westerbeke price.

Thor, I saw that link, but it seems to be for the nozzles only. Way better price than the Westerbeke nozzles tho.

Reg, my exhaust is pretty clean I guess. It's hard for me to see any smoke at all, except I do get the black soot on the transom after a couple of hours running time. The reason I pulled the injectors is because the operators manual calls for checks every 800 hours. I'm past the third scheduled check and I'm pretty sure it's never been done. I just want to know it's right...

I took the injectors in to Seattle Injectors today. They did a bench test while I was there and everything tested great. I asked lots of questions and they told me what you said Reg. As long as there's not excess smoke and plenty of power things should be fine. He said just make sure the fuel is clean etc. and said that they should last 10000 hrs. or more. Good to know. They tested them for free too.

Injectors can be reliable for a very long time if you use clean fuel, (dirty fuel is very hard on injectors), periodically they need to be tested for " breaking pressure " and adjusted accordingly, this should be done only a few times in the life of your engine unless there is black smokey exhaust. Glad to here all was good with yours Rick
