How do those of you who have the Universal M35 engine change your engine oil
filter? Short of buying the remote lube oil filter for $295 what tools or
method do you use to remove and replace the oil filter? Any tricks, tips or
ideas will be appreciated. Thanks.

My guess:

Use the filter look up tables to find what other vehicles use you filter type. IE my W21 uses the same filter as some Acura's. Makes sense as the Acura's have high compression engines....

The search for a remote that works with that vehicle. All you are doing is replacing the filter with a plate, hose and and new remote mounting plate.

Nice link, Thor, thanks.  I did notice that it said not to use the regular relocation kits on boats or diesels but to use a different style.  Still trying to figure that one out.

I use a strap wrench to loosen the filter and then a good baggie over the filter to catch leaking oil as I remove it by hand.  I've heard it suggested that after loosening, stab the filter with an ice pick to drain the oil into a proper receptacle before taking it off the engine.  I'll try that next time, actually next week.

Hello there, Joe

Thank you, for your interest in our TransDapt billet aluminum oil filter relocation kits for your Kubota marine diesel engine.

According to our information we found that the Kubota engine usually uses the 20mmX1.5 threads.

We also found that the recommended Fram oil filter part# PH3593A will also work and has the same 20mmX1.5 threads.

SORRY, but unfortunately we currently DO NOT offer an billet aluminum adapter with the 20mmX1.5" threads at this time.

We only have the regular cast oil filter kits with 20mmX1.5" but it is NOT recommended for the Marine Diesel engines.

You must using something heavy-duty grade.

Good Luck,

I'm interested in purchasing one of your oil filter relocation kits.  I've not been able to figure out which one on your website.  The application is:

Westerbeke W27 diesel installed on a sailboat.  This is basically a 3 cylinder Kubota tractor engine.

Joe, this is the same information I'm coming up with for my Universal, the only game in town is Westerbeke. I stopped to talk with a Kubota dealer I know very well and he isn't familiar with a remote filter set up because they aren't a necessary item for the tractor industry. It becomes a "special" application for our MARINE usage and it comes with a BIG price tag because they know they have us by the short hair with our pleasure boats.

Speaking of filters, I bought a NAPA filter this fall because I was out of the Universal filters I normally use and it was half the price of the Universal, $7.69 + tax versus $15.99 + s/h. A friend who has the same engine as mine in his Niagara 35 has been using NAPA filters for years with no issues. I'm going to see how this works for me and I may continue using NAPA filters.

I don't think we'll see these aftermarket remote filter kits any time soon from anyone other than Westerbeke because they're too much of a specialty item. Make no mistake, there IS a difference between the automotive application and our marine diesel motors. I'm not about to experiment with something that's not prescribed by a "marine diesel doctor".

One of these from this company will probably work, I just haven't had time to figure out which one.  They're made for diesels.

You can add this to the list:

CARQUEST 85334

But what about comparative quality? Are all filters equal in quality
and design? Is there a reliability factor related to the bypass valve?

Should these questions keep one up at night?

Hi Bill

I have found this site seems to have so interesting information. I am not aware of any "study" that has been done.

hello Joe,
years ago I was given a list of optional oil filters, as I only use the fram ph3593A which works great, I have never used the other ones, so I don't know, but here is my list, no  duplicates from your list.

I changed my oil and filter last week on my M35 (1989).  The Fram filter which I put on last year was very difficlult to remove forcing me to loosen the alternator bracket in order to gain sufficient clearance.  The Universal filter is shorter and went on easily and should come off easily too.   A strap wrench was need to loosen as well to tighten.   I didn't do the "ice pick stab" yet had very little dripping from the old filter, perhaps because I had drained sump the day before.

Nothing but your hands should ever, ever be used to tighten an oil filter.  It certainly would account for why it would be hard to remove.  A shorter filter would also mean less filtration.

I'll bet it's because the oil had really cooled down (in the filter) so slower to drip (assuming you ran engine before draining oil).  I'll try this and change oil during a cool period then wait a day for the filter.
