LAWRENCE, Ind. — Lawrence police are asking for help finding out who is
responsible for a shooting that wounded three people at a soccer practice
Thursday night.

According to the Lawrence Police Department, officers were called around
10:20 p.m. to an outdoor soccer field in the 11000 block of E. 62nd Street
for a person shot.

Upon arrival to the area, which is near the intersection of Pendleton Pike
and Oaklandon Road, LPD said officers found three adults who had been
shot.

Lawrence police believe shots were fired by two passing cars on 62nd
Street. Those bullets then hit three innocent people at the FC Pride
Performance Center, who were clearly not the intended targets.

The three victims are members of the semi-professional Indy Gladiators
soccer team.

Police say there is no excuse for that violence.

“This was very much a fluke incident,” said Lawrence Police Deputy Chief
Gary Woodruff.

Deputy Chief Woodruff explains that several witnesses attending practice
at FC Pride Performance heard a series of gunshots fired between two
vehicles on 62nd Street.

The three victims injured on this field are described as the Gladiators’
head coach, assistant coach and a player.

All three suffered non-life threatening graze wounds.

“It’s sad that three people were shot and it was entirely unnecessary, but
it could have been a lot worse,” said Woodruff.

The United Premier Soccer League’s website confirms the Gladiators were
practicing for a conference finals match scheduled for this weekend.

Police do not believe the soccer field or the victims were targeted in any
way and are disgusted by the careless gunfire.

“It’s an absolute reckless disregard for the people in the area,” said
Woodruff. “Once those shots are fired you can’t take the bullets back and
last night we saw the consequences of those triggers being pulled. It’s
absolutely unacceptable.”

The FC Pride Performance Center is adjacent to Veterans Memorial Park.

The shooting comes less than three weeks after three other people were
wounded during a shooting at a different park in Lawrence.

Police urge the public to help them stop that irresponsible violence.

“It makes you feel indignant about it and the entire community should feel
indignant about it, so anyone with information needs to share it because
it needs to stop,” said Woodruff.

Because it was dark, police did not have any descriptions of the vehicles
involved in the shooting.

Authorities did clarify that the soccer complex, FC Pride Performance, was
not directly involved in the event.

Anyone with information can still contact either the Lawrence Police
Department or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
