INDIANAPOLIS — A 14-year-old girl and a 19-year-old man are in jail
accused of murder following a deadly shooting on Indy’s west side.

IMPD was called to Lohr Drive on Sunday just before 10 a.m. on a report of
a person shot.

IMPD: Teen shot and killed on Indy’s west side
Driving his mother’s SUV, 15-year-old Jeremiah Lewis was shot behind the
wheel before he crashed into a mailbox and a parked truck, then died on
Indy’s west side Sunday morning.

According to court records, the 14-year-old female suspect confessed to
police she arranged to meet the 15-year-old victim to buy some marijuana.

The 14-year-old female suspect then allegedly told police 19-year-old
Wardell Wright and another man killed the young victim.

“We can and should do better to raise up our children and protect them,”
said IMPD Lt. Shane Foley.

“Whatever it is we’re doing does not work,” said Kendall Wyatt with the
Young Lions Action Network.

Kendall Wyatt believes because homicides involving juvenile victims and
suspects has been on the rise in recent years, the city needs to find new
ways to engage with young people and steer them away from violence.

“We’ve had a failure at the city and state level,” said Wyatt. “Young
people aren’t inherently bad people. What they are is without leadership
and guidance.”

Public health chief promises continued work on child gun safety
Wyatt said the state also needs to commit additional funding mental health
resources.

Police claim Wright was on GPS monitoring that placed him near the scene
of killing.

The 19-year-old was out on bond pending trial after prosecutors claim he
took part in a robbery and carjacking at a gas station on Lafayette
earlier this year.

Court records allege Wright was found with a machine gun conversion device
after leading police on a chase in that stolen car before crashing at U-
Indy in January.

A judge denied a request at that time for a higher than standard bond to
be imposed.

Wright’s arrest for Sunday’s homicide is another example of how police
insist they can’t stop violence alone.

“Our officers are doing what the community expects them to do. We can’t do
this alone. Reducing crime and holding people accountable takes all parts
of the justice criminal system,” said Foley.

Both suspects are being held without bond.

A spokesman at the prosecutor’s office says the 14-year-old will be kept
in juvenile court unless a judge waives the case to adult court. According
to the statute, a person must be at least 16-years-old to have the case
direct filed into adult court.

The chief of police made a statement following the arrests:

“I am grateful to the detectives who worked hard to make these arrests so
quickly and to the members of our community who cooperated with the
investigation,” said Chief Randal Taylor. “At the same time, I am
devastated there is a 15-year-old who was murdered, there are two other
teens whose lives will be changed forever, and there are three families
whose lives are in chaos over this incident. We can and must do better as
a community to help guide our children and keep tragedies like this from
happening.”

Police are asking for anyone with information about this case to contact
IMPD Homicide detective Cristopher Edwards at
Christoph...@indy.gov, call (317) 327-3475, or call Crime Stoppers
anonymously at 262-TIPS.
