It will be the first to include a caste enumeration since 1931 and the first “fully digital” census with an option of self-enumeration. The findings from Census 2027 will shape delimitation and the rollout of women’s reservation in Parliament. It is therefore imperative to deliberate on its conduct and ensure that no one is left uncounted. The accuracy of this count is not a technicality, especially for marginalised communities; it determines access to welfare, political representation and public resources. Peoples’ Census Watch, an informal citizen-led platform, is emerging to bring together individuals, academics, experts, and civil society organisations who share a commitment to ensure that the upcoming round of Census in India accurately represents the realities of marginalised communities* including Dalits, Adivasis, Minorities, Denotified and Nomadic Tribes, Homeless, Single Women, Persons with Disabilities, migrant workers, people without houses, landless, nomadic communities, and women among others. What is houselisting - that’s starting from April 1? How to self-enumerate?Over the next six months, the government enumerator will conduct house-to-house fieldwork. Each State and UT will designate a specific 30-day window within this period to complete the exercise.
