All urls from files, that doesn't exists are processed using mod-rewrite engine. This is useful for urls with ".html" extension, but doesn't provide any benefit except additional server load. We have rule in ".htaccess" file, that skips images, but it seems, that "*.bmp" files are not skipped.

Yes, indeed .BMP files are not skipped.

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !\.(gif|jpg|png|js|css|ico|swf)$ [NC]

should be replaced with:

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !\.(gif|jpg|png|bmp|js|css|ico|swf)$ [NC]

However may be we should approach this from the other site - list what
we want to be processed using Mod-rewrite instead?

That's impossible, because mod-rewrite url could contain of anything
and we have no exact specifcation what is "everything else" to
properly exclude it from processing.

Universal rule is to exclude all external resources (stylesheets,
scripts, images) that could be potentially missing because of site
developer errors.

If I'm/.htaccess is missing something, then please let me know.
