Genesis 19:1-3,15-17,24-26 Now the two angels came to Sodom in the
evening as Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom When Lot saw them, he
rose to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. And he
said, "Now behold, my lords, please turn aside into your servant's
house, and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise
early and go on your way." They said however, "No, but we shall spend
the night in the square." Yet he urged them strongly, so they turned
aside to him and entered his house; and he prepared a feast for them,
and baked unleavened bread, and they ate... When morning dawned, the
angels urged Lot, saying, "Up, take your wife and your two daughters
who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the
city." But he hesitated. So the men seized his hand and the hand of
his wife and the hands of his two daughters, for the compassion of the
LORD was upon him; and they brought him out, and put him outside the
city. When they had brought them outside, one said, " Escape for your
life! Do not look behind you, and do not stay anywhere in the valley;
escape to the mountains, or you will be swept away"... Then the LORD
rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of
heaven, and He overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the
inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. But his wife,
from behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
WOW! Today's chapter is filled with hate, hurt, doom, destruction and
brokenness and makes me wonder what we could ever learn out of it. I
have taken a few verses but urge you to read the entire chapter before
you continue.
God's angels price to Sodom after visiting with Abraham and they keep
God's word to Abraham that God would spare those who are righteous.
The only righteous found there were Lot and his wife and daughters.
Everyone else showed their true colors by demanding the life of the
two visitors whom they knew had come to condemn them and their land.
God's was justified to condemn this land because of the utter
brokenness of these people and we praise God for His swift action.
The question that lingers on my mind is why would God permit Lot's
wife to become a pillar of salt when He went through so much to save
her, Lot and their daughters?
Back in chapter 13, Abraham and Lot decided to part ways to ensure
they were not in each other's face and they could prosper their flocks
and families without conflict. Lot chose the valley because it looked
beautiful whereas Abraham chose God and obediently followed God's
leading.
Also, before visiting Sodom, Abraham pleads for the life of Lot and
his family and based on that request, God obliges him and actually
spares Lot and his family.
Finally, when Lot was told to flee to the hills, he asks God if he can
go to a neighboring village, Zoar, instead because finds comfort again
in trusting in his own judgment than in God's.
Lot's wife looked back and was consumed by the raining sulphur even
though they were instructed not to and this makes her a memorable
example of the indignation and wrath that overtakes the halting and
the backsliding.
Three lessons we learnt today are that we need to follow God and not
our own wisdom for we do not know what is to come, that when we are
given instructions by God, we need to obey or pay the price of
disobedience and finally backsliding has serious consequences.
I pray today that you along with me will remember these words and
imprint them on our heads and hearts so that we will never forget. Let
us commit to Jesus
Christ who has committed His life to loving us more than we can ever
imagine and let us call on him as our Lord and Master.
