The historic Mercer Oak, believed to have been present during the Battle of Princeton, once stood on the battlefield near what is now Mercer Road. It collapsed from old age in March 2000. An offspring grown from an acorn of the Mercer Oak in 1981 now thrives next to the large stump of the original tree.
South Mountain State Battlefield seeks to preserve and interpret the first major Civil War battle to take place in Maryland. Fought on September 14, 1862, the Battle of South Mountain was a critical turning point in the American Civil War. The Union victories at South Mountain and Antietam (fought three days later) led President Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. The state battlefield, located along the gaps of South Mountain, includes valuable farm and forestland, and is home to diverse wildlife. Only here does the Appalachian National Scenic Trail intersect a major Civil War battlefield.

We have a minimum of 30 minutes on the battlefield all the way up to 2-hours with pricing starting at $15. That is a bargain and it gets cheaper the more game time you play.

The trail begins near the battlefield monuments and ends at the stone shed near the tower. It is an excellent cross-country ski trail in the winter.
Military historians note that of all the Revolutionary and Civil War battlefields in the United States, Hubbardton Battlefield is the most evocative of the period in which the battle took place. The setting and views from the battlefield are much as they were in 1777, with open meadows and sweeping views of the Green, Taconic, and Adirondack mountains. Visitors to this hallowed ground can take in the natural setting, tour the museum, and walk in the footsteps of history.
Fallen Timbers Battlefield Memorial Park, across the Anthony Wayne Trail from the actual battlefield, has an impressive monument to the important battle and the combatants on both sides. A bike/pedestrian bridge connects the two sites. Owned by Ohio History Connection, the monument is situated on a bluff overlooking Side Cut Metropark and the beautiful Maumee River.
