My thoughts......

i also think we need to know two things.... 1. Ask Mayte if spanish can be put in our transcript with credits converted from contact hours. 2. what are these two credit courses at IMT?

please edit ... add your thoughts...

Dear sir,

...This means that given the current formula, if we want to take a saner number of subjects, we are forced to face a shortfall and take up extra credit courses when we are back at IMT.

also for those of us whose areas of interest are not in courses of finance, operations, and marekting (for example myself - i am interested in more HR subjects) i still have to take 7 subjects and still face a shortfall. It will still come to taking 8 subjects since i dont want to have a shortfall in this exchange program. Instead we had looked at this opportunity to be able to earn 3 extra credits. I personally intended to take extra credits not only in this exchnage program, but also in one of the coming terms at IMT. Instead i find myself in a situation where i have to face a shortfall and complete it in one of the next few terms at IMT.

Please alllow us to take upto 6 subjects and thereon take one 3 ECTS course for 3 extra credits. We do want to take up some subjects here just for our learning as the subjects are not only interesting but also beautifully taught by the faculty here. However, having all of them in our transcript will be disadvantageous to our overall performance...we only request for taking a best of 6 in our transcript while allowing us to add one more subjects to count as extra credits.

Dear All,

As per the instructions already given, you are supposed to take subjects equivalent to 17 IMT Credits (as per the formula defined). In case of shortfall despite opting for maximum number of subjects, the same can be made good here at IMT by opting appropriate number of electives of 2 credits each. From the course details, however, it is apparent that one can easily choose 6 subjects equivalent to 16 IMT Credits (including the mandatory one).

So, the students should choose the subjects accordingly.

All the best,

Subhajit Bhattacharyya

Subject: Course choices at IPADE, Mexico

Dear Madam,

Hope you are doing good. We are glad to inform you that all of us have safely reached IPADE, Mexico without much hassle.

This is regarding the credit requirements communicated to us for the exchange program 2013. We need to submit our final course choices by end of 11th January 2013 and thus request you to look into this urgently.

First and foremost, we are sure you will appreciate that every business school has its own fundamental pedagogy and set of ethos by which it functions. IPADE is a top ranked university and it shows eminently in its rigor, its pedagogy and overall functioning. We have attached an Excel Sheet which lists courses that we are being offered from IPADE in this trimester. It also has details about the number of contact hours, independent hours, ECTS Credits, course contents, etc. We would request you to kindly go through it once.

1. Here in IPADE, they strictly follow the Case based methodology. Hence, the course and credit system is designed so that students have enough time for Individual study + Team Work + Case discussions in class. Please find attached a formal time table given to us, that mentions slots for each one of them.

2. As per IPADE, the exchange students need to opt for just 5-6 courses in this trimester. For students of IPADE, 6-7 courses are required. We have attached the Excel Sheet which has the name of the courses, contact and independent hours. If we use the 7 hours = 1 ECTS credit rule here in IPADE, we need to take a minimum of 8 to 9 courses (see attachment 2), spending more than 125 hours total in addition to around 20 hours on language course! Now this seems absurd even to the administration of IPADE and they recommend us to talk to our university as it can get a lot strenuous in the weeks to come.

3. We have to take the Spanish course here for our own survival. It will have classes 4-5 days a week. With this, it eventually will leave very less time for any self-study.

4. We have another course called "Doing Business in Emerging Markets", it is a complete one week intensive course. And it is mandatory for us. So we will have to go for this 6 ECTS credits course without a choice. Though it offers 21 contact hours (3 IMT Credits), if you re-consider this course with the independent hours (maximum of all in the list, 53 hours), it accounts to 6 ECTS Credits. This actually accounts to 74 hours to be dedicated to this course in just a week's time. This i am sure will give you an insight so as to how much work is needed in IPADE and their course is designed according to international standards (ECTS) keeping both the contact and study hours in mind.

We request you to kindly look into this issue, as this is proving to be greatly disadvantageous to us. Please find attached herewith :

1. Our detailed course syllabus, credit and contact hours details for each of the courses being offered at IPADE.

2. A sample course selection with details of IMT credits as well. (Minimum 8 subjects selected to complete IMT credit requirement)

3. Sample formal time table that mentions slots for each study component including individual study, teamwork, case discussions

Keeping in view the international standardization practice of using the ECTS Credit system where I ECTS Credit = 1 IMT Credit, we request you to relax the 7 hours = IMT credit rule. This will allow us to take up 5 to 6 subjects which we want to study in addition to the language course (which has 4 to 6 classroom hours per week) and complete credit requirements of both institutions, while ensuring our performance is robust.

Thanks a lot.

Regards,

IMTians at IPADE, Mx

Now:-

Dear Sir,

We appreciate the recommendations given by you. This however shall not be in the best interest of our personal and career growths.

In the IPADE course list that we mailed to you earlier, they follow the international practices of awarding ECTS Credits according to the total weighted hours given for each subjects. I hope you will appreciate the course structure and the pedagogy followed at IPADE.

When we look up the site of IMT at (http://www.imt.edu/aboutimt/Studying.aspx) it clearly mentions IMT follows international practice of following the ECTS Credits. It is clearly mentioned their, that, 1 IMT Credit = 1 ECTS Credit. For your ease, we have attached a screenshot of the same.

We understand the conflicts that were faced by the PGP committee while sending students to Exchange program and dealing with the ones who get a free pass and enjoy their vacations. IPADE is all different Sir. I could also request the student (Ms. Marisol) from IPADE who had come for exchange to IMT (last trimester) to give a brief about the different pedagogy and credit system comparing both the schools. If needed we can request the administrative department to forward it to you so that the authenticity of the same in not questionable.

There are exchange students from a total of 12 nationalities studying in IPADE here. This was a similar problem faced at some other B-Schools from Canada. I am attaching photographs of the Facebook pages, where students from 10 other nationalities, have mentioned the same, unified, international practice of US/ECTS Credit system being followed in their universities. It is overwhelming to know, the Canadian University has accepted and clearly understood the different pedagogy in the institutes. If required, we can request the students to mail you any authentication that they might have got from their college regarding the same.

Trust us Sir, it is a hugely great learning experience for us at IPADE here. Such opportunities might not be available to us ever, we want to maximize our learning from this reputed school. We as it is are planning to sit for all almost the courses that IPADE has to offer. Our only concern then remains, that, with so much in hand it would be difficult to for us to balance our grades for our placements. If you need, we can ask IPADE to forward you our attendance records for each subject along with our transcript.

We kindly want to request you to consider the subjects in our transcript on the basis of the international practice of 1 IMT Credit = 1 ECTS Credit. We want to add the subjects of our choice in our transcript so that we can speak about the same during our placements.

In the end, we would only request you to give a thought about our career and kindly be accommodating and give us the advantage of choosing our choice subjects while completing a total of 17 ECTS/IMT Credits.

If you need any documents/proofs that might be needed, we would be happy to provide you at the earliest.
