Kim, you’ll have to excuse Jeff, his triathlon knowledge is as limited as his ability to go fast, and thus why he’ll be paying me the big $$ when he does finally cross the finish line… but I digress.

However, my response does assume you have the ladies version of the infinite gear.  If that is correct, please do not attempt to wear the infinite shorts for your full IM or for that matter, more than an hour long training session, as you’ll be risking permanent injury.

The men’s version of our tri shorts are very much different than the ladies, and yes, the men’s version work fantastic for long distance.  For your training, get something with a better pad than the ladies shorts!!

As an FYI, the next version of our triathlon gear will have the top of the line pad in both the men’s and women’s shorts, but those will not arrive for 2-3 months.  These new versions will work great come race day, but again, I’d recommend something better than the current ladies infinite gear in the mean time.

Have a great day – Paul

You will get used to the infinite short over long rides. For the two IMs I've done, I wore the infinite short the entire time

Since I have never done a full before, I wondered whether we wear the Infinite clothes for the entire race.  Since I am not a cyclist, I wondered if any of you put on thicker shorts for the 112 miles.  Do they have changing areas or will my "seat" be trained sufficiently with all this training to enable me to use the thinner Infinite shorts.  Let me know what you think.  FYI:  I am only trying to finish, so times are not important to me (except the 17 hour one of course!)

I like to wear two fairly think pairs of tri shorts instead of the thicker cycling shorts. THat's what I did for IMKY with the IMTC shorts being one of those pairs and it worked great.  But yes, there are changing tents in transition, so wear whatever you're most comfortable with for the bike ride.  I just have never found well padded cycling shorts that are flexible enough, but the two pairs of thin ones works well for me.

I actually trained mostly and raced two IMs in my womens infinite shorts. Yes the pad isn't much but you definitely build up tolerance. I find some heavily padded shorts more uncomfortable.

Trial and error. Just try different shorts. Don't expect any option to provide comfort the entire time. Learning to tolerate the discomfort is part of the mental training.

I just did a 1/2 iron and in the bike transition I put an extra pair of cycle shorts over my tri shorts. it worked ok. my butt still hurt I have not had enough time in the saddle to get used to it.  it took me almost know time to put them on and take them off during transition and since I was putting them over another pair of shorts I did not have to go to a change tent. Since we are going to be on the bike for hours I think it is important to be as comfortable as possible. I guess once we get to elite level we can worry about amount of time changing in transition.

I am going to try several different methods this summer for IMKY

Yeah... what she said! 112 miles is far... even in a car. Lots of long bike rides during training will answer all of these questions for you. I loved my DeSoto shorts in KY last year, and my 2xu's in Lake Placid... but I'm a minimalist ... that said, time in the saddle will be your best defense!

For IMMooI wore my favorite bike shorts (Shebeest brand) and then changed into tri shorts for the run.  Especially since changing shorts is pretty quick and easy (nothing like trying to wrestle out of or into a new top or sports bra when all sweaty) the extra couple of seconds was well worth it to me, not to mention it was nice to start the run feeling kind of fresh* too.

* "fresh" being an entirely relative term at that point.

I really love "CX-W ventilation" triathlon shorts. They a bit longer which is exactly what I was looking for, dry fast after swimming, and I train in them too.

I find the regular bike shorts are not comfortable for me for long rides outside.

Another question for the group: what are your thoughts on compression sleeves? There was a study that you can get quicker recovery and also a little faster while running if you wear them (in training and racing).

However, I find it's not very comfortable to wear during the race. During one of the races, half, I wore them swimming, and then the water was dripping into my shoes during the bike, and during another I decided to put them on in T1 and it was a slow process since I was wet. I do think they help, so I'd like to find a way to wear them during a long race. What do you do?

Thank you!
Diana
