Dear all,
As most of you probably already are aware of, I have now officially left the GICHD. At the end of 2013 I decided to move to London to be closer to my family there. In London I have accepted an offer for a position as Technical Director with G4S with emphasis on mine action and ordnance management.
My replacement at the GICHD is Mr Olivier Cottray (cc), who most of you already know. Olivier was heading the information management programme while I was division head. He was selected following a very competitive selection process. I am very happy with his appointment and I ask you all to give him your full support.
In 2014 we will start to bear the fruits of our hard work as a division in 2012 and 2013. This includes the mine action intelligence tool (MINT), the online IMSMA community (mWiki), and, most of all, the release of IMSMA v6. The version 6 release is the first new version of IMSMA since version 5 was released in 2005. The new version is a complete overhaul behind the scenes which will make the software faster and more stable. The look and feel of the new version remains the same.
In terms of added functionality you will notice the complete renovation of the ways to extract information from IMSMA in any format. The online Mine action intelligence tool (MINT) will provide a powerful set of tools for supporting monitoring and evaluation of mine action programmes – for those who want to use it. MINT is separate to IMSMA and can be used with almost any data source. It also allows for restriction of access so that only certain groups, eg internal staff or donors, can access certain online statistics.
IMSMA v6 also includes new functionality to support rights-based victim assistance in accordance with the CCM and the CRPD. This too marks a significant expansion of functionality which has been widely requested by the user community.
All of this will be launched in conjunction with the national directors meeting in April. Keep in contact with Olivier for details on side events and potential web-casts.
The focus of the Division in 2014 leading into 2015 will be to roll-out these new tools to those who are interested. In parallel, the team will concentrate efforts on enhancing our pedagogical tools for mine action information management. This will include a re-drafting of the MIQ, expansion of the mWiki, the development of standard curricula, development of explanatory videos, e-learning, better example data, and an exercise book.
In closing I want to take this opportunity to thank the whole mine action community for your support during my five years with the GICHD. I feel that we as the mine action community have made tremendous progress in terms of information management. But there is a lot left to do. Please maintain your drive and ambitions to keep mine action at the cutting edge of information management of the humanitarian industry.
On a personal note, I will remain in the mine action family and I do hence not see this as a goodbye. I hope to see you soon again and I look forward to making contact with you in my new role with G4S.
Note that my GICHD account and telephone will be closed this week. Once I have them, I will publish my new contact details on the web. Until then you can feel free to use my personal email: pderi...@gmail.com
With best regards,
Avec mes meilleures salutations,
(Former) Assistant Director and Head, Management Consulting division
Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining
