So, we got this 'disguising repetition' thing really stressed at us
(did you notice it in the LShip packet?)...one way we could mix it up
(say, after the first day when everyone's legs are like rubber bands)
is we could do half the foundations in a zenkuts (this works really
well for blocks and punches) or could move around a little bit (we'd
probably all have to turn to the side to move up and down the short
edge of the gym). Plus, if we lose the 'less is more' battle for
foundations, it would be a good way of sneaking in up to 50x
techniques without anyone *really* noticing. Whereas if you have to
sit in shikodachi the whole time, well...yeah.

Might I also suggest performing uraken from shizentai rather than
doing only the set of three that we have at IMSA? IMO while they demo
different applications, they are kind of contrived as being done in
pairs. Single urakens (with body shifting, optionally with sneaking
the back leg forward) are very valuable because you can use them in
sparring, and they actually show up in Kata.

Don't get me wrong, I think we should still do the 3x10 uraken drill,
i just think we should add in 'normal' urakens as well. Plus they're
faster and snap more :-P

hmmm. i'm all for doing cross-ex style kihon. that's a lot of what we
do here, cuz you get all the transition stuff in, you're moving
around, we can do stuf in kiba dachi and shizentai dachi and zenkutsu
dachi and move up and down the floor.... like, we can mix it up... do
a few sets of punches, then do some cross ex, then do some stationary
stuff... its lots more fun imo like that. we would want to line up
longwise tho, instead of the short way in the gym.
re: teh uraken stuff: really nice-fun techniques, as a cross the floor
exercise, is back leg kick then uraken. cuz you think of dong a down
block or a punch, but uraken works really nice too. advanced version:
kick, uraken, then down block. cuz you have to shift after the
backfists to put enough power into the downblock.

but, i totally agree. like we do the kicks from different stances, we
should do the upper body kihon too. we do a few in shikodachi to
isolate them, and a few more other ways to get the reps and get the
body used to different situations and the same movements.

i agree to moving and varying it a bit. sounds cooler.

time especially at you guys :-P
definately like the combination of moves idea.

you think *we're* weak. just wait... remember, you have to pass
intersession all three years and we decide whether or not you pass. i
wanna see you do workout stuff OUR way... instead of the imsa way. me
and dean will design a workout regimen *just* for you. :-D

Kihon just means "basics" So any 'foundation' exercise, any moving
and techniques, even drills and partner exercises (including cross-ex)
technically are Kihon. But I think for this page, we're just talking
about things everyone in the class does together, like walking forward
in zenkutsu dachi doing oi-tsuki+gyaku-tsuki (lunge punch+reverse
punch).

yep. another way of explaining it is that normal karate classes can be
split up into three 'subjects': kihon (or basics), kata (forms) and
kumite (sparring)
you need kihon in order to practice kata and kumite, and (although you
may hear differently from other people) it helps to know kata (and,
obviously, kihon) in order to practice kumite.
