re: vocab, need to plan out the quiz/game/review things ahead of time.
my use of time was rather lacking in uh, finesse. or something. it
went a little better with the jeopardy (which was planned ahead of
time) so that would be good again. i'm surprised they knew the answers
to so many of the questions!
the team stuff worked good, just need to not let them discuss things
between each other before answering. have to think of better ways to
accomplish that than oranges...

Ooooh! Good point! Having the vocab sheet was handy, but you're
right--it was definitely kind of fumbled on the first few days because
we were winging it. I didn't get to see all of the Jeopardy (I was
busy chauffeuring Jen around :-P), but what I saw seemed to be going
pretty well. I thought the orange thing was cool too, in that
everyone had to take a turn answering a question.

I think it was awesome the amount of stuff they learned--and it just
goes to show that we had our expectations in about the right place
with all the Japanese and stuff...and I think if we used less English,
they'd assimilate the Japanese more readily.

Another idea! I just had two excellent experiences with 'team
competitions'--this might be an awesome afternoon activity towards the
end of IS, or a great way to wrap up Thursday's class in a fun way
(assuming we get the whole kata thing sorted out). Basically, the
students break up into teams, and send one person up at a time for
various events (can include holding the longest jigotai/shiko-dachi,
most pushups in 30/60 seconds, best punches, most random piece of
terminology, etc.). There are also team events, such as group kata
(with creativity in shapes, ways, etc. encouraged), relay races,
passing a ball around, etc. It was fantastic...I think the kids would
like it too. I just want to ping you all for feedback so we can
either all agree or agree to disagree--but I wanted to put that out
there.
