Water
pollution is defined as the unwanted alteration in the physical, chemical or
biological characteristics of water, caused by excessive accumulation of
pollutions.
Water pollution is continuously becoming a global problem and is intensifying with the course of time due to rising domestic, industrial and agricultural activities. In the context of India, the growing trend of pollution is observed in these rivers namely The Ganges , Brahmaputra, Subarnarekha, Mahi, Tapi & Narmada. However, a decreasing trend of water pollution has also been observed in some Indian rivers like Yamuna, Beas, Satluj, Sabarmati, Baitarni, Brahmani, Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, Kauveri & Pennar, specially with respect to organic pollutants.
In terms of the groundwater of India, it was found that the salinity and the level of organic pollution is much above the desired level in states like Andhra Pradesh, Asom, Puducherry, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Daman & Dadra Nagar Haveli & Uttar Pradesh.
