ASAK,
Here is an update on the Indo-US hospital from my recent visti to
Hyderabad.
The Dialysis unit, with 12 beds is up and running, we are doing 250
dialysis sessions per month. 90% of dialysis is paid, 10% free. We
charge a low rate of Rs. 800 per dialysis, the average in Hyderabad
being Rs. 1200, and upto Rs. 2000. At this rate, the unit is self-
supporting. This should keep getting busier in the future.
The Ophthalmology unit, in association with Pushpagiri Eye Hospital,
another not-for-profit organization conducts 2 eye camps per week,
where 70-100 patients are seen per camp. 4000 patients have been seen
so far. Each camp detects 7-8 cataracts, 30-40 patients for refraction
and 1-2 retina cases. 260 cataract surgeries have been performed in
the last 5 months, an average of 50 per month. 95% of these surgeries,
and all of the refraction is free of charge.
We recently hired a RMO. There are 3 ER physicians working in shifts.
Dr. Habeeb Ashraf, an ER MD from Baltimore will be spending 4 hours a
day for the next 3 months, seeing patients for free and training the
ER physicians.
We have a full time dentist, 4 GPs one of whom does Gyne, a part time
ENT and Ortho. None of these MDs are salaried.
There is also a part time Pathologist, the lab does basic blood work,
chemistry and has ABG capability. This needs to be expanded in the
future.
Basic X-rays and Ultrasound is being done now, needs to be expanded
too.
The Pharmacy has street access and is generating Rs 5000 per day.
The surgical suites are being completed as funds become available.
The hospital has been running a deficit of Rs 4-6,00,000 per month.
Once the surgical suites become operational in the next few months, we
should catch up quickly.
There were 2 camps conducted at the hospital in December. I did an
Asthma camp, seeing 30 patients, the ER physicians also spending some
time with me so I could do some teaching. Written protocols for asthma
management are now in place in the ER. With Dr Habeeb Ashraf these
protocols will expand.
Drs Majid, a husband and wife team conducted a Hypertension camp,
seeing 80-90 patients.
Dr Siraj gave a talk on COPD at the hospital.
All in all, I think things are on track Alhamdulillah. We have
accomplished some goals, but still have a ways to go. There are many
challenges ahead but with the help of Allah SWT, and your support, we
will Inshallah overcome them. We need your participation and duas to
make this project sucessful, Inshallah.
