Thanks for emailing your concern.
I was a part of the planning for Impact Mozilla and weighed in on the
difficult decision not to localize Impact Mozilla. With a condensed
time line before we launch, I advised Ken and the marketing team not
to push a ton of work to localizers if we were going to force a very
quick turnaround. It just didn't seem fair since there was quite a
bit to translate, and it seemed best not to send it during a very busy
time leading up to the localization of Firefox 3.1 beta 1. Finally,
in some cases, localization can become very difficult when working in
creative design of these types of projects and this was no exception.
Initial iterations of the design contained a lot of images laden with
English text in the drawings that could not be localized. We had to
go back and forth a few times just to get it to a point where it was
localizable and at that point, ran out of time.
In the future, more extensive planning will need to be incorporated to
make this better. Also, I would like to make localization one of the
priorities considered by marketing and webdev as we plan out
campaigns. Believe me, it pained us to see another opportunity missed
here.
