Hi,

I posted something in the mozilla.marketing newsgroup, but as I've
been warned about, this group had no activity since 2006. So I repost
here :

Hi,

First of all, this is a very good initiative; but once again, the
global
dimension has been swept out:
the only people able to vote in this campaign will be English speaking
people.
As a Mozilla localizator, I know that Mozilla is very concerned about
the localization, but this campaign will only reach at the most half
of
the Firefox users.
Different cultures have different feelings with regards to
marketing/advertising, so my belief is that the final choice won't
reach
the global firefox users.
Maybe this is about the budget, the delays, the resources, etc.
But, my bad, I didn't follow this initiative from the beginning, so,
maybe it is targeted only to USA, UK, Canada, Australia and India.
If not, please consider to "localize" this kind of initiative, by
involving the local communities, if they have enough resources to help
with this, or to contract for localization services where it is useful
to.

Thanks for the note! Your concerns are definitely valid. When we
first came up with the idea for Impact Mozilla, one of our top
objectives was enabling the localization community to help lead the
program. Unfortunately, as we neared the launch back in September, we
had to make some very difficult decisions and make do without several
of our top objectives, in order to launch the program on-time.

In the future, we definitely want to do a better job here... both with
future iterations of Impact Mozilla and with other marketing programs.

Thanks for emailing your concern.

I was a part of the planning for Impact Mozilla and weighed in on the
difficult decision not to localize Impact Mozilla. With a condensed
time line before we launch, I advised Ken and the marketing team not
to push a ton of work to localizers if we were going to force a very
quick turnaround. It just didn't seem fair since there was quite a
bit to translate, and it seemed best not to send it during a very busy
time leading up to the localization of Firefox 3.1 beta 1. Finally,
in some cases, localization can become very difficult when working in
creative design of these types of projects and this was no exception.
Initial iterations of the design contained a lot of images laden with
English text in the drawings that could not be localized. We had to
go back and forth a few times just to get it to a point where it was
localizable and at that point, ran out of time.

In the future, more extensive planning will need to be incorporated to
make this better. Also, I would like to make localization one of the
priorities considered by marketing and webdev as we plan out
campaigns. Believe me, it pained us to see another opportunity missed
here.

Please keep sending the great feedback. It's very much appreciated by
me and by others like our marketing team.
