to Impact Mapping
Hi

TLDR:
I looking foreword how this group (you) could help me reverse engineer this user story to impact map so I could explore more approaches and get suggestions on how do impact mapping the right way (in a fun way).
"As a Scrum Master In order to make developers more aligned I want to facilitate Impact Mapping Workshop"

(maybe try first think about this problem by your own to be more creative and share)

-----------------------------------

Spoilers (my reasoning so far)
1. Define business goal WHY
5x Whys:
Q: How more aligned teams would be useful to me?
A: The would be more effective because the underpants gnome problem would be solved
Q: Ok why is that important to you?
A: Because dev teams would be more effective
Q: And?
A: I would prove I'm effective as a Scrum Master because it's my job to make the organisation more effective.
Q: So your goal is to prove that you're an effective scrum master. Why is that?
A: Because being a great scrum master is what's motivates and drives me.

(Digression: Am I a "developer" for my company so the goal is make more money by development team being more effective (by being more aligned on wokr) GOAL A, or Am I a "developer" for Myself and I make money by selling my facilitation skills so the company I work will pay me)

GOAL A: "More aligned teams"
scale: knowledge of the development team members on WHY behind each user story
meter: development team members answering correct question what is the WHY behind US
Q: If we achieve the key targets for metrics with a completely different scope than planned, have we succeeded?
A: YES

GOAL B: Prove that I'm an effective scrum master
scale: # requests from the development team to help them in areas for which scrum masters are responsible
meter: #increased request from development team for help i can categorize as scrum masters duties
benchmark: no request to facilitate backlog refinement meetings
target: 1 per 1-3 sprints from one team or PO
Q: If we achieve the key targets for metrics with a completely different scope than planned, have we succeeded?
A: I'm not sure

2. Name key personas:
PO, SM, Stakeholders, Developement Team

(Digression Zone of control vs Sphere of influence:
make developers more aligned - sphere of influence;
facilitate Impact Mapping Workshop - sphere of control [TODO verify, but looks like it]

Impact map #1 for GOAL A:
"More aligned teams" -> SCRUM MASTER -> Facilitate Impact Mapping Session

(Digression time for a coffe break XD )
TODO run story map session for this User Story
TODO find impacts from other actors and prioritize for the goal
TODO find hidden actors
TODO check ideas from this group about GOAL A, B and new ideas

I think your biggest challenge is that you reverse engineer from a strategy to solve / achieve a not yet defined problem or opportunity.

I have had similar experiences at work when starting to work with Impact Mapping. We reversed engineered maps based on low level user stories. Only when we started reasoning from objectives and impacts we truly harnessed the power of Impact Mapping, arriving at different ideas that added more value.

So my advice; try to look at what your company cares about, it’s objectives etc. Honestly investigate if you in the role of scrum master can have an impact on it and then honestly evaluate applying Impact Mapping as a deliverable that will help you make that impact.

Cheers,
Michael

Thanks for sharing.

For me in this thread the most valuable would be if you could share exact steps you perform to gain the benefit you described:
" reasoning from objectives and impacts we truly harnessed the power of Impact Mapping, arriving at different ideas that added more value."
So I would like to know the steps that helps you reverse engineer backlog [that what I'm trying to get]
the user story:
As a Scrum Master In order to make developers more aligned I want to facilitate ImpactMappingWorksop
is hypothetical (problem) the benefit is it is fun for me (maybe others) and also abstract (not software developer related) so I could gain from it something unexpected
