Hi,

I was trying to figure out if Impact Mapping would always only have one "Why" ?

I was reading the thread "Trouble starting with first map..." and it seems to be if we have more than one "Goal",  a good thing to do in that case would be to understand the "Why" of the goals and use that as the starting point. And reading from the chapter "Preparation step 1: Discover real goals", it does tend to point that direction as well.

I read the book, and looked at some of the examples from the impact mapping website. I have not come across any that shows example of more than 1 "Why".

If I use the example in the book on "Example: Financial transaction processing", the goal there is "reduce transaction cost by 10%".  What happens if we also have another goal, say "increase profitability by 20%" ? Would that end up with a separate impact map ?

Thanks !

If you have two goals, it's a matter of prioritisation which one is more important to achieve first. You can create two maps, with different impacts and deliverables that would contribute to each goal. If there's an overlap, that's fine as well. An impact that can help you come closer to your first goal is even better if it contributes to the second as a side-effect, but generally focusing on one goal at a time helps to reach it faster and avoid scope creep.
