“Mother’s Day is meant to honor those who provide, support and nurture our families and communities, but Black mamas, especially poor, trans and queer, undocumented and disabled Black mamas are being criminalized and ripped away us through the modern-day debtors prisons known as ‘money bail.” said Je’Nae Taylor of BYP100 DC. Seventy percent of the 646,000 people held in local jails are being held pretrial — meaning they have not yet been convicted of a crime and are legally presumed innocent.
If you are interested in helping free black mothers and keeping them free, see the list of ways you can plug in below:
- DONATE: Make a donation to help bail black mothers out of jail, help with post release needs like clothings, and support ongoing programming for the mothers. All donations are greatly appreciated!
- SHARE: Please blast this information on all of your social media platforms and with your email contacts as well!
- VOLUNTEER: Join me on Thursday helping to pack gift bags and talk long term support! And support the day of efforts on May 11, 2018!
- ORGANIZE: After the bailout, the mothers will need resources to help them get around, cloth themselves and survive. If you know of organizations that can help collect gift cards to places like Target and DSW.
- CONNECT: If you have connection to AirBNB and other housing services let us know! We want to be able to help the mothers with secure housing.
Thanks in advance for making sure the bailout is a huge success! Let me know if you have questions! XOXOXO
