SEIU Local 284 Field Staff Director St. Paul, MN The Field Staff Director will supervise Contract, Internal and Political Organizers in the performance of their daily duties in member engagement, contract enforcement, and bargaining. The Field Staff Director will oversee the work of the Field Staff in implementing Local 284 and SEIU International’s programs to advance the interests of its members and working people generally. * SEIU is the largest Union in North America. Attn: Nadine Wikstrom Starting Rate: $72,000 - $79,000 KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: * Serves as a member of the Local’s Senior Leadership Team, and assists the Executive Director and other members of the Senior Leadership Team in planning and organizing strategic meetings and events; * Insures that the local's member strength plan is integrated into the structure and programmatic work of the Field Staff to maximize the integration of staff representative work with organizing, special projects and political programs; * Oversees the development and implementation of direct-report staff work plans, aligned with the Local’s strategic priorities and annual goals; * Oversees systems for servicing, grievance and bargaining for union; * Supervises Field Staff and is responsible for developing staff growth and development plans with each direct-report staff member and for providing regular feedback and conducting; regular reviews to ensure accountability and measure progress in attaining the individual and Local’s goals; * Encourages a collaborative work environment, organizes regular staff meetings and promotes a progressive political culture among staff that embodies the best of trade union principles, the SEIU mission, accountability, and pride in smart and effective staff work; * Serves as a Liaison to local union partners, community partners and the International on programs as needed; and * Makes recommendations on hiring and firing of Field Staff to the Executive Director. COMPETENCIES: * Strategic thinker: able to analyze and prioritize competing Union issues; * Proven manager and supervisor capable of building high performing teams, and motivating and developing staff, often intense internal and external pressure; * Ability to identify, train, and develop members and staff for union leadership roles; * Knowledgeable and skilled in bargaining, grievance and member service systems; * Highly effective facilitator with demonstrated leadership skills and commitment to collaborative work and positive work culture; * Self-directed and skilled at problem solving and demonstrates good judgment in making decisions, as appropriate; * Highly effective in interpersonal communications, including listening, conflict resolution, and being persuasive with members and allies; * Effective, professional written communicator, including the preparation of a variety of documents and the use of email correspondence; * Strong knowledge of campaign organizing practices to overcome opposition and secure majority support among members; * Demonstrated emotional intelligence and professional self-management and organization under pressure; * Maintains professional standards of behavior and appearance; and * Knowledge of Union history, organization, and programs. JOB DEMANDS: Salaried position, long and irregular hours, some travel and overnight stays; must have a driver’s license and a vehicle. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Must have a minimum of 7 years experience in Union leadership and staff supervision, as well as experience as a lead negotiator and union organizer.
