The Department of the Interior is devoted to
protecting and preserving the natural resources of this great nation,

This position will serve as a Correspondence Specialist in the Office of
the Executive Secretariat and Regulatory Affairs, Office of the
Secretary. The incumbent provides assistance and advice on all matters
pertaining to the processing and controlling all correspondence and
documents directed to the Secretary of the Interior. However, in
performing the following duties, the incumbent will work directly with
the staff within the Department of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Indian
Affairs, Bureau of Indian Education, and Office of the Special Trustee
as well as any other issues pertaining to Indian Affairs .
This position is located in Washington, DC.

DUTIES:
The major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
Reviews incoming correspondence, including analysis of content to determine its significance and the type of action required.
Assigns correspondence to the appropriate bureau/office and determines
the appropriate signature level for correspondence addresses to the
Secretary, Deputy Secretary, and Assistant Secretary - Indian Affairs.
Prepares an acknowledgement letter or interim response for Congressional mail.
Controls, tracks, and manages on all correspondence controlled for the
signature of the Secretary, Deputy Secretary, or Assistant Secretaries
within prescribed time frames. Records information in the data tracking
system.
Assist bureaus in meeting their Secretarial correspondence deadlines and informs the Director of problems.
Assists office with unusual correspondence or unusually high volumes of correspondence.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
ALL applicants must meet the requirements for the GS-09 level by one of the following means:
A. Experience: To qualify at the GS-9 grade level, you must have
at least one FULL year specialized experience equivalent to at least the
GS-7 grade level. Specialized experience is defined as, but is not
limited to:
Performing independent research and analysis to write and edit Departmental/organizational/company correspondence;
Developing, compiling and/or assembling reports and documents to
convey information concerning complex programs and functions to diverse
levels of understanding of an organizations programs and activities;
establishing office guidelines relating to correspondence processes and practices
tailoring information within correspondence (e.g. memos and letters)
to specific audiences, including tribal leaders, the general public,
technical specialist, and/or congress.
OR
B. Education: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate
education** leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent
graduate degree OR a combination of specialized experience and education
that totals 100% of the experience requirement.
