The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation's most effective environmental action group, combining the grassroots power of more than 2 million members and online activists with the courtroom clout and expertise of nearly 500 lawyers, scientists and other professionals to fight for the planet and its people in the halls of Congress, communities across the country, and nations around the globe. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff – a force for nature - work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bozeman, Montana and Beijing.
POSITION SUMMARY
NRDC is seeking an Associate Director to join the Center for Policy Advocacy (CPA) department in our Washington, DC office to help direct our federal advocacy campaign activities. CPA broadly consists of functional areas that include government affairs, outreach, and federal and state campaigns, and works closely with Programs, Communications, Development and the NRDC Action Fund to achieve the policy advocacy goals of the organization. The Associate Director will report to the Deputy Director and also help manage the day-to-day operations of the department. This is a highly visible position inside the institution playing a leadership role in developing and managing NRDC’s federal campaign strategies and activities. The position requires a strategic thinker with exceptional horizontal management and relationship skills.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
· Organize and update NRDC’s federal defense plan with input from relevant colleagues throughout the institution.
· Work with key national partner groups to organize and implement an integrated coalition campaign.
· Develop and maintain strong working relationships with other advocacy partners.
· Work with Development to develop a multi-year funding proposal and budget for federal defense.
· Organize or contribute to high level institutional discussions around theories of change and strategies for building NRDC’s political power, focusing on the federal level.
· Assist the Deputy Director in managing the day-to-day operation of the department.
· Supervise a Program Assistant and project-based consultants.
QUALIFICATIONS
· 10 or more years of experience in issue advocacy and electoral politics with proven leadership ability;
· Extraordinary verbal and written communication and social skills;
· Reputation for consistently achieving goals by mastering process and building consensus;
· A well-established professional network in advocacy and politics;
· A bachelor’s degree or higher.
