I'm OK is a good idea but pretty useless for anyone who doesn't have a Blackberry

I saw a post where someone said if you don't have a Blackberry to just
log into the website and use I'm OK to send SMS messages to your
contacts.

But if there is a computer that is available and has Internet access
during a natural disaster, emergency, etc. why would anyone do that
when they could just post a message on their MySpace or Facebook?

Hello:

As a developer on I'm OK, let me try to clear things up a bit. I'm OK is,
at it's basic level, a telephone number that you send an SMS to. Because of
that, any phone that has SMS capabilities may use I'm OK.

The blackberry client is there to aid in some of the other types of data you
may optionally put into your SMS messages, such as location. There is nothing
stopping anyone from not using the client and sending a message to the number
directly. That being said, we have Android and iPhone clients at various stages
of development, so at least the people with smartphones can benefit from the
added information. In the end, though, any mobile phone will do.

Apart from that, the website mainly exists to manage your account and see what
you have posted before. I do not believe there is a way to post a message from
the website itself. We have some pre-beta features that allow one to reply to
messages from the site, but that has not been rolled out onto the main site,
nor does that accommodate this use case. I'm not sure which post you are
referring which advertised this feature.

Thanks for your interest in I'm OK!

Thanks,
-Ted

Thanks Ted, for confirming my understanding of how this works.  Obviously the app needs some publicity, to get awareness and have it become the default app for this type of information.  More crucially you need to allow people to register from around the world, not just those with US numbers.  Is progress being made on that front?
