As mentioned, I'm a founding member of a small, volunteer-driven group called Lean In Beijing, which aims to create a network of Chinese and foreign women to support each other in achieving personal and professional goals.
We're organising “Women in Journalism x Lean In Beijing”, which will be held this Sunday, 15th September from 2 to 4.30pm. The Bookworm has kindly agreed to host us at no charge, and we would be very excited for you to participate.
This event is for female reporters, or women with previous experience and/or passion for journalism. We aim to create an inspiring and collaborative network of female reporters, and to engage in a productive conversation about journalism in China, and the challenges which female reporters face.
This event involves two sections, firstly a panel of speakers who will lead us in sharing the discussion on being a woman in journalism. Our confirmed speakers are Marsha Cooke (CBS Asia Bureau Chief), Helen Gao (a fantastic Chinese freelance writer for NYT and the Atlantic), Mia Li (an amazing stand-up comic and a news researcher at the NYT).
In the second section, we're hoping to create an energetic, collaborative environment of discussion. We will break into groups and discuss questions related to gender and media. (food for thought: http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/the-womens-blog-with-jane-martinson/2012/oct/15/shocking-dearth-of-women-in-journalism)
We're inviting female reporters from various publications - we've had confirmations from The Guardian, Foreign Policy, Wall Street Journal and we're expecting quite a lot of Chinese reporters as well. We've also reached out to journalism majors in university so it should be an interesting, and really great crowd.
For more information and to register, please go to http://womeninjournbj.eventbrite.com. If you have problems with registration, feel free to let me know. Feel free to forward to other female reporters!
The event is free at the moment, but we’re thinking of raising money for the Global Press Institute, a fantastic organization which trains women in developing countries to become reporters!
FYI: Lean In Beijing launched our first event in August: https://leaninbeijing.eventbrite.com which was attended by 60 participants, and was an all-round inspiring and great experience.
Let me know if you can make it this Sunday, looking forward to seeing you! Feel free to forward this email to other female reporters.
Cheers
