Records for the Old Lutheran emigration from Prussia are now online for a majority of the Pomeranian Kreise

Konventikelwesen und Auswanderung

These books cover the Altelutheranische (Old Lutheran) emigration from Pommern to North America and Australia around the period of 1834 to 1844. The Old Lutherans dissented to Friedrich Wilhelm III's forced compliance with the Prussian Union of Churches, leaving Pomerania for religious freedom elsewhere.

Emigration Project Update

Our photographer returned from his trip in Szczecin, having completed 40 books (and kindly copying over a few others he found at no additional charge). Fifteen of these books arrived a few days ago. I am currently working to get these online, and more are expected to arrive this week. Please check the Facebook page and our website frequently to see when the new arrivals are uploaded.

Some of the buzz I've heard about this project looked forward to the Old Lutheran emigration. These files, referenced above as "Konventikelwesen," are mostly now online, with the exception of Kreise Naugard and Köslin. Naugard should arrive soon. Köslin is greatly anticipated, but will have to wait until I can ship the new camera. (The camera body is in like-new condition; the lens arrived damaged.)

Indexing Records?

Can you read old script? If so, we are looking for your help to make our photographed pages more easily accessible and searchable. Not everyone can read Kurrentschrift and Sütterlin, and transcribing the most important information from these pages makes research accessible to more people.

One Pomeranian Library

Join us in exploring our new feature! Tentatively called the "One Pomeranian Library," the goal is to compile a list of resources regarding our heritage and link those to holding institutions, groups, and individuals.

Do you have a book on Pomerania? Would you be willing to help others if they need a look-up? Please consider sending an email to ch...@mypomerania.com with titles and the best contact information to reach you. I will be sporadically updating this list with the latest additions.

Special thanks to Linda Herrick and the Pommerscher Verein Freistadt for making this joint collaboration possible!

From the Editor

Dear Readers,

I'm ecstatic to bring these Old Lutheran emigration records online. My family was part of the early emigration from Cammin, Wollin, and Naugard, with other family leaving from the area just east of Königsberg in Neumark. I'm pretty sure the records for Neumark are kept in the Brandenburgisches Landeshauptarchiv. Perhaps I might discover the collection for those records someday (not just the card file). Until then, descendants of Peter Woock and Dorothee Louise Wocke will have to wait. I descend from his son's family, Carl Fredrich Woock and Henriette Wilhelmine Sasse, who were married in December 1848 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. He died while felling trees less than a week after his only son was born. The family attended Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mayville, Wisconsin.

Speaking of--a very special thanks to Linda Herrick for the painstaking work of indexing the church book for Immanuel Lutheran. This will be included in the next update of our Person Search database, along with several new features. This will take some time, but please stay tuned for when the latest iteration goes live.

Lastly, my sincerest apologies to readers who subscribed and did not receive our last update. Something misconfigured on the server kept GMX, Web.de, and several other email providers from receiving mail from us. After our most recent testing, this appears to be resolved.

Kindest regards and the best of luck in your family history pursuits!
