Forthe longest time, adapting video games into movies or television was an all but guaranteed disaster; films like "Postal," "Rampage," "Doom," and "Max Payne" were all met with widespread derision. But 2023 has provided a major turning point: Thanks to the enormous box-office success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" and the massive acclaim for the HBO series "The Last of Us," video games are finally being looked at as a source for great stories.

John accepts (of course he does, if he didn't there'd be no show), and makes an unlikely partnership with Quiet (Stephanie Beatriz). The duo traverses the treacherous roads ruled by Officer Stone (Thomas Haden Church), an uber-muscly law enforcement officer with a twisted sense of justice. There's also Sweet Tooth (the body of Samoa Joe, the voice of Will Arnett) the gleefully and terrifyingly unhinged clown-masked man with a penchant for theatre and murder.

Worse still, for characters who are as amusingly anarchic as Sweet Tooth, his actual past could never match whatever the viewer has concocted in their heads. There's a desire for shows to interrogate why characters are evil, but sometimes the most engaging thing is to offer no context for their past at all. Just being a murdering, hulking figure is more than enough to be exciting.

If we look at the plot for the 2012 game, Twisted Metal is broken down into several character arcs. Each character desires to find Calypso, who can supposedly grant any wish to the winner of the Twisted Metal tournament.

One of the characters includes Sweet Tooth, a serial killer who used to be a family man that worked out of an ice cream truck. He developed Dissociative Identity Disorder and slaughtered his whole family, except for his daughter that got away. He enters the Twisted Metal tournament in hopes that Calypso will send him to wherever his daughter is hiding. Another character you play as is Daniel Grimm, who wants Calypso to send him back in time so that he can prevent his father, a stunt performer, from taking part in the stunt that led to his death.

Honestly, they could not have done a better job with the soundtrack. Given the plot, characters, and gameplay, the epic metal music that goes along with it was the perfect finishing touch to bring all the aspects together and form a horrifying masterpiece.
