ForSpecial Accommodations, you must complete the Request for Special Accommodations Form and submit with appropriate documentation. Please allow 45 days for review and approval. Submission does not constitute approval.

Candidates must cancel scheduled weekday exams within 24 hours of the exam date. Exams on Saturday or Sunday, must be cancelled by close of business on Friday. The ACF registration fee may be transferred to a new test date within six months or will be forfeited. If the scheduled exam is not cancelled within the stated time frame, registration fees will be forfeited and candidate will still need to pay any host site fees before registering for another practical exam.

Candidates may take the practical examination on one, two, or all three of the crane types provided they have already passed/will pass the written examination in the corresponding designation within the 12-month time frame.

The practical examination is comprised of six main tasks that increase progressively in the skill level tested. Skills tested are: inspecting the equipment, hoisting, booming, swinging, following hand signals, and combination (multifunction) operations. Crane operation with load and without load is required.

NCCCO adapts the Test Site Layout (CAD) for each model of crane used for the Practical Examination to ensure the examination remains standardized for all candidates, wherever and whenever they may test.

The following sections describe the specific tasks you will be performing when taking the Practical Examination. It is important that you understand these instructions. If there is anything you do not understand, please request clarification from the Examiner.

There is also a Pre-Test Briefing, a Crane Walk Around, a Pre-Test Familiarization Period, and a Pre-Task Familiarization Period (prior to the Zigzag task) with a load. You will be required to complete all phases of the test in sequence.

You must report to the Test Site at the scheduled time. All candidates shall comply with Test Site requirements concerning personal protective equipment (PPE), which at a minimum shall meet federal OSHA requirements.

Once you exceed this time limit, however, you will lose points on a gradual basis. The optimum time for each task is stated as part of the task descriptions. At one-and-a-half times the optimum time the Examiner may end the task and move on to the next task.

The Examiner has the authority to stop the test at any time for reasons of safety. Please ask the Examiner if you have any questions. If you are disqualified due to an unsafe act, you will not be permitted to take any additional practical exams that day.

You are not permitted to telescope during the mobile crane practical exam. In the event you telescope in or out, intentionally or otherwise, while timing continues the Examiner will give you a Stop signal, a Telescope In or Out signal as needed, and indicate that you may continue the task. Please note timing of the task continues while necessary corrections are made and until the task is complete. This is not considered a circumvention or an unsafe act. Should you fail to respond to the Stop signal, the Examiner will stop the test and record it as an unsafe act.

The Examiner has the responsibility to determine if weather conditions or equipment problems are such that a test needs to be suspended. If the test is interrupted due to weather conditions or equipment problems, the procedure for restarting is as follows:

The test standards are described in the Recreational Pilot or Private Pilot Practical Test Standards. Your instructor should have a copy of the practical test standards and should review them with you prior to your practical test. If your instructor doesn't have them, you can buy them from the Superintendent of Documents or US Government Printing Office bookstores.

You can take the test as soon as, in your instructors judgment, you are ready. By endorsing your test application, your flight instructor is making a written recommendation to this effect. Your flight instructor's written recommendation shows that you have met all the prerequisites for the practical test.

FAA Flight Standards District Offices conduct practical tests for pilot certification either at the offices location or periodically in cities within the district. The offices are usually located on or adjacent to an airport. FAA has also designated many flight instructors as pilot examiners. You should make an appointment for your practical test to avoid wasted time.

If you take the test from an FAA inspector, there is no charge. If you take the test from an FAA-designated pilot examiner, you will have to pay. This is because the pilot examiner conducts tests without pay from FAA.

You don't have to wait. The FAA inspector or FAA-designated pilot examiner will issue a temporary pilots certificate effective for a specific time period. FAA will issue your permanent pilots certificate after we have reviewed your qualifications.

No. We don't charge for issuing the original pilots certificate. However, we do charge to replace any pilots certificate or medical certificate. As noted already, you may have to pay for certain other services, such as a physical examination.

Practical Exam

Practical exams are also known as Performance exams. As the name states, the exams test the candidates on the basis of their performance and ability to apply the theoretical knowledge to the actual practical state. The practical exams are usually conducted in schools, colleges, or universities during the final term. Generally, an outside examiner is invited to the institution in order to mark the students without any bias or on a fair basis.

The school teachers of the students are also present in the space where the performance exams are conducted, to boost the confidence of the students. The practical examiners ask the students to perform an experiment within the exam space and evaluate the students on the same basis.
