K/DA is a League of Legends pop group made up of Ahri, Evelynn, Kai'Sa, and Akali, all of them LoL characters and thus not actual people who actually exist. But they came pretty close to it during the recent opening ceremony of the League of Legends World Championship in Incheon, South Korea, when they appeared on stage alongside real-life counterparts Madison Beer, Miyeon and Soyeon of K-pop girl group (G)I-DLE, and Jaira Burns, thanks to the magic of augmented reality.

It's a remarkable technical accomplishment regardless of its LoL connections, but the connection is definitely there: The virtual singers were showcasing new K/DA skins that became available for purchase over the weekend. Riot doubled down on that with the release of a full-length, neon spectacle music video that puts the skins front-and-center. And like the opening ceremony video, it stands entirely on its own merits as a very cool accomplishment, even if you neither know nor care about anything to do with League of Legends.

I'll admit that all of this goes a bit (okay, entirely) over my head. It's a catchy tune for sure, but a real performance by pretend people who, as I understand LoL, spend their time outside of the band trying to kill each other is a lot to take in. My first thought when I heard about the performance was, "Ha, sounds like NG Resonance from Invisible War," and then it turned out that it actually is a lot like that. Hopefully the people behind the scenes are more pleasant, though. And if you have no idea what I'm going on about, well, now you know how I felt the first time I watched this video.

If you share my K/DA confusion, I would recommend Riot's crash-course in all things K/DA, including the lyrics to Pop/Stars (complete with phonetic Korean breaks, so you don't have to do the fake lipsync thing when you're singing along), at leagueoflegends.com. There's a more conventional skins trailer available too, but after these other two videos, there's not much point to it.

The original place the Leafs played is on the bottom floor and is now a Loblaws grocery store. You are treated with old stadium chairs when you enter and yes you can find the original face-off circle in the canned meats aisle.

My first trip to Europe and a week I will never forget. As I mentioned earlier I love history. American history is cool but my bag is Ancient Roman history. I was an officer of the Latin club in high school, can even understand some of the things that the Pope says and basically I love everything Ancient Rome. What does Rome have to do with playing hockey in Salzburg, Austria you ask?

Well let me tell you. This beer league hockey trip to play a draft tournament in Salzburg started with a 36 hour layover in Rome. It was my first time and I took full advantage. I had a private tour of the Palatine Hill Museum, visited the ruins of what is considered the first athletic stadium, and ate at a restaurant that used recipes from a 2000 year old cookbook. It was marvelous. I tell the story about the restaurant, Hostaria Antica Roma in a BLPA Big Show podcast. Right now in this blog, in front of God and everyone, I guarantee you I will host a hockey tournament in Rome one day. Who is with me? Rome Hockey Tournament. Until then check these pics out.

Thankfully, Minor League Baseball has done a great job over the years of setting the standard and showing the way forward for sports team names. There are dozens of fun, quirky, local-pride-based team names in the various minor leagues. Thus, without further ado, here are 32 of my personal favorites (with blurbs lifted mostly from Wikipedia):

The Amarillo Sod Poodles, nicknamed the Soddies, are a Minor League Baseball team of the Double-A Central and the Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. They are located in Amarillo, Texas, and play their home games at Hodgetown in downtown Amarillo. The name is in reference to the prevalence of prairie dogs in West Texas. The name was meant to convey the values of sticking together, being family oriented, and self sufficient.

The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels are a Minor League Baseball team of the Low-A Southeast and the Low-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. They are located in Fort Myers, Florida, and play their home games at the CenturyLink Sports Complex at Hammond Stadium. In December 2019, the franchise announced that it would be rebrand ahead of the 2020 season and become known as the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels.

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs are a Minor League Baseball team of the Triple-A East and the Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. They are located in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and are named in reference to pig iron, used in the manufacturing of steel, for which the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania is well known.

The Modesto Nuts are a Minor League Baseball team, aligned in the Low-A West North Division as an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. They are located in Modesto, California, and are named for the several types of nuts grown in the region.

The Sugar Land Skeeters are a Minor League Baseball team of the Triple-A West and the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros Major League Baseball club. They are located in Sugar Land, Texas, part of the Greater Houston metropolitan area, and play their home games at Constellation Field. Their name is a Southern slang word for mosquitos, which are common on summer nights in Southeast Texas.

Justice Forever was a group of superheroes formed by various members of the community, inspired to become superheroes because of the first real-life superhero known as Kick-Ass. They were incredibly successful in aiding people, as they reduced overall crime in the entire state. Recently, the group had gained more new members, but was threatened by Motherfucker, a supervillain who used to go by the name Red Mist. Colonel Stars, one of the members of Justice Forever, was killed by Motherfucker's criminal league known as the Toxic Mega-Cunts. His body was found by police to have been decapitated and have his head substituted by the head of his also-deceased pet dog, Sofia.

A short-form improv troupe, Mission: IMPROVable has been bringing comedy to campus since 1991. Mission: IMPROVable combines short punchy games interspersed with blaring rock 'n' roll to create a unique, kickass comedy show.

Toast! is a long-form improv comedy troupe. Taking a suggestion to start the show, Toast! then moves into a full feature production where anything can happen. Toast! prides itself on presenting weekly shows to entertain the UMass campus, as well as travelling the country teaching workshops and spreading laughs.

Normally, Tripp, who is 52, would have been running with them. But he had a cold, so he reverted to his race-day role of sideline encouragement, which he delivers in an emotional register that will stay imprinted in their amygdalae into adulthood.

The next group of runners stepped up to the starting line. "This is the 600. Violence, all right?" he cajoled. "This is not some middle-distance 'I'll save myself,' OK? Let's bite their head off, Ozzy Osbourne! You guys know Ozzy Osbourne, right?"

And yet the runners hustled and focused. Amid the herdlike thumping of feet, a young assistant coach from rival Harwood Union Middle & High School, Jake Pitman, marveled at the display of discipline: "They're all bought in. They want to be here. It's indoor track! It's not even regular track!"

Tripp's knack for motivating people has helped endurance athletes at U-32, a public school of 700 or so students from towns outside Montpelier, excel with head-turning consistency. They've won more than 30 state championships in Nordic skiing, track and field, and cross-country running, including seven consecutive titles for the boys' cross-country runners. In 2021, their streak earned Tripp an award as the top boys' coach in the country from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Establishing unions has gotten harder in the United States, where the proportion of unionized workers has been declining for 50 years. That's never deterred Tripp, who has honed the trade of high-stakes team building. He's worked on landmark campaigns in Vermont and more than 20 other states, organizing more than 100,000 people over the years. In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, he helped health care workers at a rural Pennsylvania nursing home take on the boss while many of them were infected with COVID-19.

Tripp played an important behind-the-scenes role last fall in the effort to organize nearly 5,600 minor-league pro baseball players, who for decades endured exploitative working conditions during their quests to make the big leagues. Their nationwide campaign defied long-held assumptions that minor leaguers were too itinerant and individualistic to band together and bite the head off Major League Baseball.
