The Latino Community Quilt at First Thursdays on Main Street

Palmetto Luna Arts invites members of the community to participate in the creation of the Latino Community Quilt this Thursday, October 1, 2014 at First Thursdays on Main Street, 1544 Main Street, Columbia SC 29201 from 6 to 9 PM. This is the opportunity for everyone to add a square to the quilt with a design representing their own culture and heritage.

“We believe we should not be thinking about building walls to keep us apart but to use art to bring us together!” said Giovanni Medellin, member of the Board of Directors of Palmetto Luna Arts. “This is our opportunity to create something with a Latino feeling but made by all members of the community.” As part of the project, individuals will have the opportunity to draw or paint a canvass square with elements of their own cultural background. These pieces will then be put together on a “community quilt” to have a visual representation of our heritage as a nation of immigrants. Our goal is to bring us together and to affect society positively through the arts.

The Latino Community Quilt is part of the arts programming for Palmetto Luna Arts’ Latino Arts Mes 2015. Other planned activities include the Day of the Day Celebration, Noche de Luna, and Lucha Libro: Literary Challenge. “We are going to be very busy during the next few weeks, we encouraged all those interested in Latino arts to keep up with our website and social media sites” said Giovanni.

The Latino Community Quilt is organized by Palmetto Luna Arts in collaboration with Ladybug Arts Studios and sponsored by the City of Columbia and One Columbia.
