Thereis some hope in the graphic novel market, which is still popular with MG readers. But as it grows more popular, it grows more flooded and it is hard to find those breakout hits that get kids reading.

At the end of the day, I am a huge advocate for tweens and teens reading, for books, and for libraries. I have been in this field for 30 years now. I have seen it reach major peaks and these past couple of years have been like nothing I have ever experienced before. Although that is truth of all of life right now, from the pandemic to politics. What happens next is incredibly important. I think publishers, book sellers, librarians and parents need to push back against book banning (and yes, I recognize that many are). I personally advocate for a return to more mass market paperbacks, including series based on popular media tie-ins and romances for teens. Oh, and some horror like Goosebumps (yes, I know they are still being published) and say Lois Duncan and Christopher Pike. We need shorter, age appropriate books that are affordable and easy to carry.

Tristan Strong series by Kwame Mbalia (3 books): Yep, this was another book club selection. This one was for our middle school group, and I filled in for the leader the month that the kids read this book. My oldest was not interested in this book AT ALL, so we listened to it as an audiobook while we sewed, and guess what? She LOVED it! In this epic fantasy, the author weaves in several legendary Black folk heroes and characters (John Henry, Brer Rabbit, Anansi, etc.) who need to team up to seal a hole in the sky. Being familiar with these characters from Black folk tales is certainly not a requirement for enjoying the series, but I do feel like the background connections gave my kids an extra burst of happiness while listening/reading.

Stunt Boy by Jason Reynolds: This highly illustrated novel features Portico Reeves as a regular superhero boy who saves the people in his apartment building and wishes he could save his parents who are constantly arguing.

Clayton Byrd Goes Underground by Rita Williams-Garcia: This is another great story from the author that brought us the One Crazy Summer trilogy. In this book,

Clayton runs away from home in search of the Bluesman after his grandfather, Cool Papa Byrd, dies. After leaving home, he journeys through NYC to Washington Square Park, learning some surprising things along the way.

Before the Ever After by Jacqueline Woodson: Written by the author of Brown Girl Dreaming, this book is about a boy named ZJ who is struggling immensely because his charismatic father is changing due to head injuries sustained during his professional football career. ZJ begins to question whether any of their old family traditions and memories even really matter if his dad can no longer remember them.

* Look Both Ways by Jason Reynolds: This book contains ten short stories (one per block) about what happens after the dismissal bell rings, and brilliantly weaves them into one wickedly funny, piercingly poignant look at the detours we face on the walk home, and in life. One of the stories features a boy standing up against homophobia. Trigger warning that it contains homophobic violence.

Battle of the Books was an annual in-school competition that allowed students to sign up as teams of four, read a list of books issued by the librarian, and compete against other teams in a Jeopardy-style competition against other teams. Each book had a three-tier system of points: six points for answering the question correctly, four points for naming the author, and two points for naming the title.

Brigham Young University researcher Sarah Coyne analyzed the use of swear words in 40 YA novels on the New York Times best-seller list for children in 2008. Her study, published in the May 18, 2012, edition of the journal Mass Communication and Society, reports 35 of the 40 books contained at least one instance of profane language.

I had better luck on a Circle of Moms forum, in which a parent said a 13-year-old asked if she could swear at home. These answers gave a bit more insight into when parents thought exposure to and use of foul language was allowable:

Full honesty as Future Ticia 2023 was updating this list I did a lot of moving books around and some of these books I initially put for older kids, but I wanted to have a list of 50, so clearly you should decide how you want to do it.

This is an awesome list. Apparently, there are a lot of books A has not read yet ? I was just telling her yesterday about your book + movie series and heard in response (again) that she hates movies. The only book-based movie she ever loved was The Martian, and I am happy to see it included on your list!

I recently reread Bridge to Terabithia, which I read and loved as a kid (and as an adult). Bridge to Terabithia deals with death, and over the years many people have questioned how appropriate is for its intended age group.

Raina is glamourous, athletic, tough, adventurous and independent. She can do anything that an older sibling can do and then some. She can read, cook, climb, ride a bike, fly, and toggle between her world and ours in the blink of an eye.

What Ella has to say: These books were AMAZING! I thought that the different kinds of candy with their different names suggesting what they did were super fun to listen to, like moon rocks that make you float and clean slates that erase your memory. Ani loved them until they started getting scary so I think these books are better for a little bit older kids. I was also happy to read a Brandon Mull book because he came to our school in an assembly and talked about his books.

Not as bizarre as they sound, space operas are melodramatic, galaxy-hopping stories about epic battles set in outer space (think Star Wars). Expect lots of action, sumptuous world-building, and complex plots spanning centuries.

An immersive historical setting with lots of rich worldbuilding and research combined with a strong romantic plot that aligns with the romance genre conventions (including HEA or HPN). Historical romance can feature fantasy elements, too. Remember to pitch or market your novel based on which genre/subgenre you think is the main focus and which fanbase it will most appeal to.
