December11, 2007 Offering convenience and versatility well beyond the capability of your stock-standard photo frame, digital photo displays are growing rapidly in popularity and functionality. Taking a step beyond the desk-bound or wall-mounted versions, even the humble keychain has now been digitized with products like the "Pocket Album", a portable digital keychain photo viewer with a 1.5-inch color LCD screen.

Providing a great alternative to carrying photos of loved ones in a standard keychain, wallet or purse, the Pocket Album packs 8MB of internal memory into its tiny (2.2" x 1.6" x 0.5") footprint. The Digital Foci device can carry up to 74 photos at a time and images can be viewed either by an automatic slideshow with adjustable time intervals or by scrolling manually. The rechargeable battery offers nine hours of use and the device weighs in at just 1.2oz.

Retailing for USD$39.95, the Pocket Album comes complete with photo viewer software for converting your photos from your PC to the device. The software crops and rotates photos before automatically resizing them for optimal storage and display. Available in black, silver and blue, it is compatible with both Windows and Mac OS.

Digital Foci is also the maker of the Image Moments customizable digital photo frame that allows the user to customize their framing with interchangeable frames, wall-mounting, and landscape/portrait positioning.

As an electronics hacker, I'm always on the lookout for something nice to hack and re-purpose for other things. Recently, I found that an online electronicsstore here in the Netherlands had a 'digital keychain photo-viewer' on sale. Whileother people may think that E10,- is too steep for a gimmick that you buy once andthen never use, my first thoughts were that E10,- is not a lot of money for aLiIon or LiPo-cell, an 128x128 color display, a microcontroller, some flash andan USB-cable. So I bought two.

If you're not interested in the nitty-gritty technical details, you can go directlyto the results.

When they arrived, I did what every self-respecting tinkerer does: take it apart. As expected, the device contains a cute 100mAh lil' LiIon or LiPo-cell, an LCD and aPCB with on one side the flash (an MX26LV160 2MByte flash-chip) and on the other sidean glob-topped chip. These chips have the die directly glued to the PCB and are covered with epoxy. This is a real cheap way to make PCBs, but it means there are no markings to go by. The ID of the chip had to be obtained by another means.

On the software side, the device acts like an unwritable mass-storage device filled with crap. Peeking on the software on the supplied CD (which offcourse wasOSX and Windows-only) by using a debugger showed it wasn't supposed to: the device is read and written by writingcommands to a certain offset into the mass storage device, and reading results andwriting data by using other offsets. The debugger also revealed that the firmwareidentifies the chip by looking for SITRONIX CORP. at the start of the device. Some browsing at the Sitronix site revealed that the chip could only be an ST2205U. Luckily, the user manual for that is available on the 'Net: it seemsthat this chip is an 65C02 on steroids! Nice to find technology that wasdeveloped 26 years ago acting as the core of a toy I just purchased as new.

In 2020, unable to travel to my hometown of Ciudad Jurez, Mexico, during the pandemic, I started touring the city on Google Maps. I used this tool to re-explore sites in Ciudad Jurez. With infrequent visits from the Google car and its 9-eyes camera, I often find sites that are frozen in time, many of them captured between 2008 and 2013 in a period known as the War on Drugs. I began to collect these images into a digital archive and taxonomize them as architecture, glitches, militarization, and landscape, among others. To date, the archive has more than 500 images.

Instead of blowing these images up, I started printing the digital archives as a 35 mm negative and inserted them into a pocket-size viewfinder, showing imagery that resist the typical media representations of the city, which was known as one of the most violent in the world. Lush flowers and trees, children riding bicycles, brightly colored houses and walls, hand painted signs, people working, and local businesses turned the Street View images into an intimate object with the keychain photo viewer. I ask to pay close attention to these sites, and our relation with the border, not through the recycled images of violence that are easily available, but with these other everyday images.

Avenida Paseo Triunfo de la Repblica. The Gardi building was built in 1988 and was used as a radio station, restaurant, political party offices, art gallery and as a car dealership, however its expensive maintenance does not allow it to prosper. The original idea was to build an ice cream parlor, from there it takes the form of an ice cream or snow cone.

Avenida de la Industria. When you think of Jurez, you think of maquiladoras. It is part of our lives. My sister works in one of them where recently there was a fire. When you think of maquiladoras, you think about femicide. Research has shown correlations between economic and political issues and violence against women along the border. In the time period between the implementation of NAFTA in 1994 and 2001, the homicide rate for women increased by 600 percent.

4130 Calle Plata. In 2018 the Christian churches of Ciudad Jurez tried to get the Guinness World Records organization to recognize the message "The Bible is the truth read it", which is on a hill in the city, as one of the largest in the world. The message is almost 35 years old, having been made in 1987.

7512 Maravillas. When I was a university student, it was also the time when there were military checkpoints all over the city. On one occasion I was driving and they stopped me and asked what my job was. Without thinking I answered almost proudly: "I am an Artist" In a few seconds they pointed their weapons at me and asked me to get out of the vehicle. I was unaware of the existence of the "Artistas Asesinos", the armed group of the Sinaloa Cartel, founded by two criminals who were also proud of their artistic skills.

504 Calle Vicente Guerrero. A family in a truck on the outskirts of the city. In Jurez, housing complexes are constantly being built only for the benefit of construction companies. Grasping corruption is key to understanding how the city grows towards the outskirts, with those who live further away the most affected, without paving or basic services.

I have successfully loaded the software on to my Mac, and uploaded photos to the keychain. The green light is on, indicating that unit is fully charged, however, once disconnected from the USB cable, it won't turn on. HELP PLEASE.

I've now returned the original keychain, bought another.... same thing. Returned, bought a third.... same thing. Never works unless plugged into a USB port. I sat on hold two times to customer support for over a half hour. They were useless, one blamed it on the store that they must have damaged it. The other blamed it on the USB cable - which didn't make sense. If it can download pictures, the cable should be fine. I played the game anyway and swapped cables - same result. These things are just pieces of crap!

I was able to download pictures and after an overnight charge, it won't turn on when disconnected from the computer. It was a gift to my wife, I guess I'll have to get her something else. It's a pain to give someone a gift that is a piece of junk.

I don't think the company exist's anymore, can't find anything on them since 2007. I think the best advice I can give is not to buy the product, unfortantley I bought it from gottschalk's which is going out of business and said they do not take return's.

I spoke with someone from customer service today, the person told me to try re-setting the unit while it was plugged into the computer in order to have it cycle through another charge cycle. Sometimes they do not take the initial charge.

NO DRIVER FOR MAC OS 10.5: I have the same problem on my Mac G5, system Leopard OS 10.5. Got the software downloaded, first from the tiny cd, then from the website altho the website is 1.0 and the tiny cd is 1.0.2.

could only get the viewer to choose updating by pushing a bent paper clip into the reset hole. then the icon would say "be sure the viewer is on update" and when I clicked OK, the application would close. Messed with it for hours.

Finally got through to the customer care (1-800-374-2744) and learned they do not have a driver for Leopard - and apparently have no plans to do so. The rep could only suggest trying a different cable (I did, no change) and he will mail the latest driver from the manufacturer. If that does not do it, no other option but to return for refund, but since this was a christmas gift I am not sure where to return it.
