Mindfulness is our innate capacity to pay attention in the present
moment. Started in 1979 by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, Mindfulness-Based
Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the systematic application of mindfulness
training to stress and to health problems related to stress. MBSR is
clinically proven in the treatment of anxiety, depression, anger and
communication problems, and in managing the stress resulting from
illness. Even with our greatest challenges, mindfulness can teach us
to live more satisfying lives, and to nurture
our health and well-being.
For those of you in the East Bay who don't mind commuting to San
Francisco, I will also be teaching a daylong class on whole body
breathing on Saturday, October 2, at the SF Buddhist Center at 37
Bartlett Street. The class is $35. A description of the class follows
the registration link.

The Buddha emphasized the importance of concentration and meditative
absorption in the process of awakening. But many meditators find
concentration difficult to attain. As a meditative technique, Whole
Body Breathing is a way of sensitizing to the breath so that ease and
pleasure can naturally arise. When the mind finds pleasure in its
meditation object, it can become absorbed more easily. Absorption
leads to stillness, which becomes a platform for penetrating insight
into the nature of all phenomena as stressful, impermanent, and
impersonal, thus liberating the heart. As we become more intimate with
our breathing, we discover the possibility that each breath can reveal
the whole of the dharma, from suffering to the end of suffering. The
day will include led meditations, talks, and periods of Q&A.
