Respect Windows sort order doesn't work

Under Settings -> Image, I ticked the box for "Use Windows File Explorer sort order if possible." However, right now it isn't working for me. When I tap through a few images left or right, they appear in a seemingly random order.

I've had this issue before, and it seems to come up randomly. I'm pretty sure it works sometimes. What causes this problem, anyway? And is there a way or a workaround to fix it?

IG only can detect the sort order if the Explorer window is open. And even if it's already detected, it only supports the sort order: by Name, by Extension, by File Size.

That's why I indicate "if possible" for the option.
