Thumbnails for HEIC

I see one person had a problem seeing thumbnails at all once switched to Imageglass, but all he said was he hacked windows to fix it. I see all thumbs except for HEIC photos. That's fine in Explorer, but shouldn't the thumbnail bar in the application display thumbnails instead of just the application logo? I tried adjusting the imageboost setting, but no difference.

I have no problems seeing HEIC thumbnails in IG - versions 8 or the latest MOON release.

What version of Windows, what version of IG?

Do you have the Windows HEIF Extensions installed? [https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/heif-image-extensions/9pmmsr1cgpwg?activetab=pivot:overviewtab]

A wee reminder: IG does not provide thumbnails for Windows Explorer.

I'm running IG KOBE version 8.0.12.8 ... I downloaded it yesterday thinking it was the latest. Is that my problem?

I'm on Windows 10 Pro version 1909. Fully updated as far as I can tell.

Wow! I did not have that extension and didn't know there was a free one! Before installing IG, I tried to open .HEIC and my App store popped up and said I needed a 99 cent program.

The HEIF extension didn't help with viewing the photos or with the thumbnails withing ImageGlass. I do see that the HEIF extension says it depends on the HEVC extension which costs a dollar. I guess I'll have to buy it but then I don't know what I need IG for.

IG Kobe 8.0.12.8 is the latest stable version. If you don't mind trying a latest-bleeding-edge version, you could download ImageGlass MOON 8.1.36 from imageglass.org/moon [portable x64 only, no installer]. There was a HEIC related fix recently.

Drat I thought it was fully free. My bad.

I'm wondering if the issue is specific to your file(s) as I can see HEIC thumbnails fine in the various versions of IG. If you'd care to provide a file showing the problem then we could give it a try ...

Apparently a free version of HEVC was available but no longer. However, if you install VLC (which is free) [https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html] it comes with HEVC.

And I was wrong, BTW. I CAN'T see HEIC thumbnails in ImageGlass on a different box. Where I can see 'em I probably have the extensions or VLC or something else installed.

So it's not specific to your files. I'll see what I can find out.

Ok thanks. I'll try MOON. Here's an example of an HEIC that I can view in ImageGlass, but itself and its neighbors won't display as thumbnails other than the IG logo. Actually nvm, this page won't let me upload or insert any of the HEIC files.

I did find that same 'fix' where there was once a free HEVC ext alongside the paid one, but is no longer availabe.
