Hey ,
If you’re like most writers, you typically hide away and write in private until you have something to show. Whenever you’re completely finished with what you’ve written, you show the world.
But instead of keeping things under wraps until you’re done, “writing in public” means showing the process and sharing the journey.
What does writing in public look like if you’re writing a book? Here are a few ideas:
- Record your screen while writing, speed it up, and share a timelapse at the end of each day on social media.
- Live stream a writing session. Write in silence and answer questions at the end.
- Share a draft publicly. This could be just one of the chapters or your whole book!
“But working in public is scary…”
Why would you want to do this? Why give away parts of the story and show your imperfect, and unfinished, writing to the world?
Well, if you think forward a little bit, one of the greatest challenges you’ll face when it comes to launching your book is getting people’s attention.
If you only create in private up until the launch, you’ll have an uphill battle trying to get people to notice.
But if you share your process and progress as you go, you'll build an audience of people who will be excited about your book.
Your process is the content
Launching a book can feel overwhelming, because you’ve already worked so hard to write the book itself, and now you feel pressured to make even more promotional content.
But instead of thinking of promotional content as something extra you have to make, you can simply pull back the curtain on your work as you do it.
You don’t need to do anything differently than what you’re doing now. All you have to do is share what you’re already doing.
Sharing your process as you go is a great way to create content and get people to feel invested in your project. Every time you share, you create another opportunity for people to sign up for your email list and get notified of the launch.
Whoever writes in public gets the attention
Have you ever noticed how some authors seem to get all of the attention even when other people have written something similar?
It can be frustrating when you’ve worked really hard on a book but no one seems to notice or care. And it’s even more frustrating when someone else gets attention for a book that isn’t even as good as the one you wrote!
So why does this happen?
They’re writing in public! That’s why they’re getting the attention.
Yes, you have to write the book, but if you want to be known, you have to share as you go. You can share all (or parts) of the story you’re writing or share the story of writing the story! That’s what makes the difference.
Write your book
Writing a book is a daunting task. From coming up with the topic, to showing up every day to write, to trying to get attention…
…it can be overwhelming.
And then there’s the worry you’ll put in all of this effort and no one will care!
But there is a way to set yourself up for the best chance of success, and that’s by following what many others who’ve self published their own books have done.
I have many author friends who have made far more money self publishing books on small topics that publishers wouldn’t even consider. And many of them started just like me: without an audience.
After hearing enough of these stories I can tell you they aren’t a fluke. With a good topic and the right marketing tactics you can make a living from your writing as well—and Authority shows you how.
