I want to congratulate you on starting your journey to writing your book.
Most people don’t think of “writer” when they think of a high-paying profession.
But I’m here to show you how you can actually get paid very well from your writing. You just need to know how to package, market, and sell it.
There’s a good chance you’ve been thinking about writing a book for a while. Maybe you’ve even started writing your book but never finished.
There’s no way around it: writing a book is challenging.
It’s hard enough figuring out what to write your book about, how to structure it, and how to title it—let alone actually sit down and do the writing! So it’s no wonder the most common question I get is:
"What app do you use for writing?"
It's not a bad question all together, but it's really just a distraction from what matters. It’s usually the wrong question for most people asking it.
If you’re asking this question, you probably have yet to write anything substantial and you certainly haven't established a writing habit (we’ll talk more about that later). You can, of course, write in any app! Scrivener, Pages, Google Doc—even Notepad and TextEdit are fine. The text editor isn't what makes the difference.
Even if you start with an app you later decide you don’t like, it’s easy to copy and paste your draft into something better.
But everyone wants an app. They want to install some killer piece of software that will jumpstart their writing progress and guarantee success.
Luckily for you, I've got one. It's the only app you need to become a better writer, and it's already on your computer. But it’s probably not what you think.
The killer writing app
I've often talked about how you need to build a writing habit and write every day. Whether you write 1,000 words or for 20 minutes it doesn't matter so long as you make consistent progress.
And that's true, but it's missing a critical component:
You need to schedule a specific time to write. Don't fit writing in whenever you find time. Schedule it.

The killer app that will make you a better writer and help you finish your book is actually your calendar.
When you use iCloud, Google Calendar, or Outlook…
Schedule a specific time—a meeting with yourself–to write.
Real writers don't “find” time to write. They make time to write.
Set a goal to write 1,000 words a day. Or set a goal to write for 20 minutes. But make sure to schedule a specific time to write.
This is your homework for today: go create a daily, recurring event on your calendar called “Write”, and show up to it the same way you would a meeting.
