Isuccessfully upgraded yesterday from 8.1 and this morning I was looking at the new "desktop switcher." I was looking for an OSX style touchpad gesture to switch between them. I followed the instructions on the second part of Get Mac-Like Scrolling and Gestures on a Windows Laptop to try and get a custom Synaptics driver working. In the course of this, I uninstalled the factory Synaptics drivers using "Programs and Features" in the control panel. When trying to install the new custom drivers, I got the error:

A newer version of the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver is installed. If you want to install the older version of the Driver, please uninstall the current Synaptics driver by selecting "Synaptics Pointing device" from the "Add/Remove Programs" Control Panel, then run Setup again.

After rebooting and attempting again with no success, I turned to Lenovo's website. I found the support page for my device (Lenovo Y510P). Seeing no Windows 10 driver, I tried to download the 8.1 driver. It appears to run, even copying files into Program Files, but when I hit "Finish" in the msi style installer, a windows 10 notification appears saying

In a final attempt to get the touchpad working, I went to the Synaptics website to download a generic driver. I once again downloaded the one listed for windows 8. Attempting to run this, I ran into the same error as the custom Synaptics driver I started with ("A newer version of the Synaptics Pointing Device...").

I then pulled up the trusty device manager, and seeing the Touchpad listed under Pointing devices, I uninstalled it thinking that I could maybe get the generic driver to work with it uninstalled. I later realized this was a mistake, because the lenovo drivers no longer appear in Windows Update. Needless to say, I didn't get any change out of the generic driver, or the custom one for that matter.

Using the Device manager, was able to select the new "Unknown device" and use windows update to find drivers, but during the installation of those drivers, the error: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" occurred. Now, the device status is listed as

Do the advanced uninstall. It will create a System Restore Point if something goes bad then run the native uninstaller. After that is done it will remove everything Synaptic related including driver and registry entries. It may ask to restart.

What worked for me was to go to Device Manager > Mice and other pointing devices > Find "Synaptics SMBus TouchPad" > Right-click > Click on "Remove device" > Check "Delete the driver software for this device" > Click on "Remove" > Restart PC. The installer should work after this.

I experienced that the Synaptics Touchpad doesnt work anymore. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver but i doest help. I cant even see the touchpad in the listof hardware and devices. And whenever select the mouse properties it alway pops up the message like this Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver if you have installed another ps 2 pointing device driver please uninstall the synaptics by using the yes button. You then need to reinstall your pointing device driverfor your external device again.

Loading default settings in BIOS can help when the system is unable to function properly due to changed or corrupted settings. When you load default settings, BIOS will be restored to the original settings that were set when the motherboard was manufactured.

If after BIOS restoration and EC reset, the touchpad is functional in the BIOS/UEFI screen but becomes inoperative upon entering the Windows system, please proceed to the next section to update the BIOS and drivers.

Note: If the touchpad still cannot operate in the BIOS/UEFI screen, it might be a hardware issue with the touchpad. We recommend visiting an authorized ASUS service center for further diagnosis.

Please go to the ASUS support site to download and install the following drivers. Here you can learn more about How to search and download drivers. (The following pictures are the current version as a reference, please download the latest version from the ASUS Support Site.)

If the problem happens recently, and if you have ever created a restore point or there is an automatic system restore existed, try to restore the device to a point before the problem began to resolve the problem. Here you can learn more about How to use restore point to restore the system. If the problem persists, please continue the next troubleshooting step.

If the problem persists after all troubleshooting steps are completed. Please backup your personal files, then reset the device to back to its original configuration. Here you can learn more about How to reset the system.

The genuine SynTPEnhService.exe file is a software component of Synaptics Pointing Device by Synaptics.

SynTPEnhService.exe makes additional configuration options and enhancements, such as defining button functions and changing sensitivity, available for Synaptics touchpads. This is not an essential Windows process but disabling it might cause problems with the pointing device.

Synaptics Pointing Devices may refer to integrated hardware devices such as trackpads, touchpads, touchscreens, etc. manufactured by Synaptics. Problems related to these devices may be resolved by updating the device drivers. Uninstalling this device will not remove it as Windows will reinstall it upon rebooting the system.
