For my case I am using ExoPlayer IMA SDK for Android and wondering if IMA SDK will still work on devices without Play Services like on some Huawei device.

I already asked same question from ExoPlayer repo here: https://github.com/google/ExoPlayer/issues/8002#issuecomment-699963310

They pointed out that it will work on some non play service device such as Amazon Fire but not sure on other case that is not yet on the documentation. Our team is wondering if it will work fully and fine on devices like Huawei that has no Play Services for us to measure our app's compatibility and its scalability.

Thank you.

These libraries are included and part of the main functionality in our product so we need a confirmation about this cases.

Hi Bitwise,

Thank you for bringing this question to our attention. Based on the information that you have given me, the IMA SDK for Android is generally compatible both with and without the Play Service. But seeing as how you are testing on Amazon Fire, it is possible that some 3rd party builds of Android could have some bugs that could effect the IMA SDK.

So it is clear that it has no dependency on Play Services at all, and the remaining possible bug may cause by the changes made by the manufacturers which is usually a case most of the time in the Android platform ecosystem.

Hi there,

Thanks for your message.

To be clear, the SDK requires Google Play Services to be bundled into your app. In fact, if you check our basic sample app (with IMA ExoPlayer integration), you will see play-services being appended as part of the external libraries (attached screenshot).

However, if the Play Services or Play Store isn’t available on the device, as mentioned by my colleague earlier, the IMA SDK is compatible for devices with or without the Play Service, and should have no issues regarding the said dependencies.
