[IMA SDK HTML5] - Can we use custom video player for playing on Instream ad?

Hi,

Can we play instream video ads on a video player of our choice? We needed to control certain aspects of playback.

We were hoping to use "media URL" from the ad response to play in our player, and IMA SDK can fire the trackers.

If this is not possible, can we customize the UI of the ad player?

Hi Husain,

getMediaUrl in HTML5 SDK would get you the URL for the media content. There is limited support for playing ads in a custom player, one of the options listed below may fit your use case. In general, we don't support seek during ad break or changing the UI of "Learn More" or the countdown timer in mobile devices.

For playback in a custom player, we have Custom Ad Playback in Android, and in HTML5 there are integrations with other players such as Shaka Player and VideoJS. In iOS Safari, if you don't disableCustomPlaybackForIOS10Plus then the native player plays the ad. There is limited support for UI customization in HTML5 SDK. Hi Aryeh,

We need a solution similar to Native Android in HTML 5, where our player will consume the media URL, but the responsibility for firing the events such as firstQuartile, midpoint, thirdQuartile, pause, resume, mute, unmute etc. remains with IMA SDK.

Let me know if such a solution exists.

Currently we do not have ad custom playback for html 5 SDK, so I raised your concern with the team as a feature request, however this doesn't guarantee anything as it will still be reviewed if it is feasible and necessary. You can check our latest releases for an update.

Our team just got back to us and confirmed that SDK-owned playback is the only supported mode for the IMA SDK for HTML5 by design. Sadly, there is no plan anytime soon to add ad custom playback for HTML5.
