Please do NOT raise the retirement age of Doctors

I have gone through the article published by Dr Vinay Aggarwal Past National President IMA where he has advocated the need for increasing the retirement age of doctors. I have tremendous respect for him but I disagree with him on this issue. Experience of seniors is invaluable yes but denial of opportunities to youngsters is also an issue which should not be ignored.

We already have surplus doctors (1doctor/786 population) with shrinking opportunities for the young doctors. With the Government planning to increase 75000 MBBS seats over next 5 years there is going to be a glut of doctors of modern scientific medicine. Government has successfully sold the lie that an MBBS degree is a golden ticket. Retaining seniors will result in extended training period and further exploitation of junior doctors. Today there is vacancy for less than 4000 MBBS doctors to work in Primary Health Centres across India. We produce about 1,10,000 MBBS doctors every year and do not have jobs for them where will jobs come for the additional 75000 unless seniors retire. Recent Suicide by the young trainee radiologist should be a wakeup call to everyone regarding the stress and frustration and disappointment the junior doctors feel in the current system.

Maybe a system like that which exists among advocates needs to be introduced whereby a Designated senior advocate perforce has to promote a junior with whose credentials only can he argue in court. Seniors as mentors are welcome but seniors as competitors are not. Allow the seniors to supervise the work done by those in their team and give their two bit but all intervention should be done by the people less than 65 years age. We have for long ignored the issue of creating professional space for new entrants in the profession. We are not immortal and will need the youngsters to be competent as they are the ones who will treat us. Keeping them doing the scut work while those who are 70 operate is neither wise nor desirable.

Respected sir
Agree with you by heart and soul. This issues has been ignored since long time and non of our senior colleges speak about time.
Moreover We Doctors have become time machine, We don't spare time to live and enjoy life even after the age of 60.

Regards
